76ers vs. Celtics Game 2 Prediction: 2026 NBA Playoffs

The Boston Celtics delivered a statement in Game 1 of their first-round series with the Philadelphia 76ers, winning 123-91 in a game that was never particularly close. The 32-point margin was a message to the league and a gut punch for a 76ers team that came in shorthanded and now faces a daunting 0-1 series deficit heading into Game 2 on Tuesday night at TD Garden. Boston is playing with confidence and depth, while Philadelphia is navigating a serious roster challenge that complicates everything about their playoff hopes.

The biggest storyline in this series is Joel Embiid’s absence. Philadelphia’s franchise center is out following appendectomy surgery, removing the one player who could credibly match Boston’s interior size and scoring. Without Embiid, the 76ers rely on Tyrese Maxey to carry an enormous offensive burden. Maxey averaged 28.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game during the regular season and is one of the best young players in the league, but asking one guard to carry a shorthanded team into a hostile TD Garden environment is an enormous ask.

Celtics Installed as Massive Home Favorites

Boston opens as a -800 favorite for Game 2 with Philadelphia at +550. The spread sits at Boston -13.5 and the series odds have the Celtics at -900. These are extraordinary numbers that reflect just how dominant Boston has been and how significant Embiid’s absence is. The market essentially views this as a foregone conclusion, and the Game 1 result gave them every reason to feel that way. At -800 on the moneyline, the value play for anyone is on the spread side or finding a way to back Philadelphia if they believe in a bounce-back.

Boston’s Depth Versus Philadelphia’s Grit

The Celtics are simply built for this moment. Their offensive rating of 120.1 ranks second in the NBA, their defensive rating of 111.8 ranks fourth, and their net rating of +8.3 puts them among the elite teams in the league. Jaylen Brown leads with 28.7 points per game and is playing with the kind of aggression that makes him nearly impossible to stop in the half court. Jayson Tatum is back from injury and the team went 13-3 in the 16 games he played down the stretch. Derrick White provides elite two-way play — 5.4 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game.

The Celtics’ three-point shooting is a nightmare for opposing defenses. They shot 36.7% from beyond the arc as a team, with seven different players shooting above the league average. That means there is no soft spot in the rotation that Philadelphia can exploit with a zone or help defense. Wherever the 76ers turn, there is a shooter who can make them pay.

Philadelphia’s situation is genuinely difficult. Maxey will fight, Paul George will contribute, and the 76ers have enough professional talent to compete in individual possessions. But the season series was tied 2-2 with three games decided by one possession — that was with a healthy Embiid. Without him, Philadelphia\s margin for error in every possession shrinks dramatically. The Celtics can go under ball screens and pack the paint without worrying about the lob threat or the post game that Embiid provides.

Prediction and Best Bet

Boston wins Game 2 comfortably. The combination of home court, depth, shooting, and the Embiid absence creates a matchup problem the 76ers cannot solve with one or two adjustments. Maxey will score, but one player cannot overcome the systematic advantages the Celtics have in this series. Philadelphia needs a miracle bounce-back to stay competitive, and TD Garden is the wrong place to find one.

  • Prediction: Celtics 121, 76ers 99
  • Best Bet: Celtics -13.5 spread

Take Boston to cover the spread. The -13.5 is a number that feels reasonable given what happened in Game 1 and the structural mismatch in this series. The Celtics are at home, they are motivated, and they have seven knockdown shooters who will torture a depleted Philadelphia defense. The 76ers without Embiid are a different team entirely, and Boston will expose that at every opportunity. Cover the spread with the Celtics.
