3 MLB Strikeout Props to Back on August 6: Cease, Valdez, and Suarez

Thursday’s slate is loaded with swing-and-miss arms, and three of them line up as legitimate strikeout targets before a single pitch is thrown. When a pitcher’s season-long strikeout rate is comfortably clearing his own prop line, that’s not a coin flip — that’s a number the sportsbook is daring you to bet against math. These three strikeout props line up that way.

All three lean on real 2026 workloads, not one hot outing. Here’s why each number should fall on Thursday.

Dylan Cease Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-132)

Dylan Cease has been the best swing-and-miss arm in baseball not named a Cy Young frontrunner, and Thursday’s matchup with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field sets up perfectly for another double-digit-strikeout type of afternoon. Cease is averaging 8.7 strikeouts per game across 20 starts this season, sitting well clear of his 6.5 line, and his season-long numbers back it up in full: a 7-5 record, 2.41 ERA, and 174 strikeouts.

That strikeout total isn’t empty volume, either — Cease has punched out 174 hitters against just 51 walks and 78 hits allowed, a ratio that points to a pitcher missing bats consistently rather than getting bailed out by defense. The Cubs lineup he faces on Thursday strikes out at a middle-of-the-pack clip, but Cease has been so far above his own number all year that even an average strikeout matchup still projects comfortably over 6.5.

Betting on Cease’s strikeouts has essentially been betting on his season average holding, and there’s no red flag in the matchup that suggests Thursday breaks that pattern.

Framber Valdez Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-151/-164)

Framber Valdez doesn’t rack up strikeouts the way Cease does, and that’s exactly why this line is worth a closer look. Valdez is a ground-ball-heavy lefty who’s averaging 4.5 strikeouts per game across 22 starts this season, and his 4.5-strikeout prop sits almost exactly on that season average. Books are pricing the over at -151 to -164, meaning they expect him to clear it more often than not.

Valdez brings a 6-7 record and 4.41 ERA into his start against the Seattle Mariners, numbers that reflect a pitcher who leans on soft contact and a heavy sinker rather than pure strikeout stuff. Even so, his 98 strikeouts over 22 starts show he’s capable of missing enough bats to clear a line set right at his own average — sportsbooks routinely shade a pitcher’s own number slightly under his true rate to build in the house edge, and that’s the case here.

The Mariners lineup isn’t a strikeout-prone group, but Valdez doesn’t need an elite matchup to hit a total this modest — he just needs a normal start.

Ranger Suarez Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-148)

Ranger Suarez has quietly turned into one of the more reliable strikeout bets on a nightly basis, and his matchup against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night gives him another favorable spot to clear 5.5. Suarez is averaging 5.5 strikeouts per game across 19 starts, putting him right at his own line — but the -148 odds tell you the market expects him to push past that number more often than not, and his season profile supports that lean.

Suarez carries a 4-3 record with a sharp 3.15 ERA and 105 strikeouts over those 19 starts, numbers that reflect a pitcher who’s been trending in the right direction as the season has worn on. A left-hander who’s missing bats at a strong enough clip to sit above a 3.00 ERA deep into the summer is a pitcher worth trusting in a strikeout market, especially against a White Sox lineup that hasn’t given opposing starters much trouble whiffing hitters this year.

The number is close, but Suarez’s recent form and the odds both point the same direction: over.

Lock These In

Thursday’s card gives bettors three strikeout props where the pitcher’s own season rate is doing most of the heavy lifting. None of these require a huge swing in form or a soft matchup — they’re bets on established performance holding up one more time. Always confirm current lines with your sportsbook before placing a wager, since numbers can move closer to first pitch.

  • Dylan Cease Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-132)
  • Framber Valdez Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-151/-164)
  • Ranger Suarez Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-148)
