The Yankees arrive at Tropicana Field riding an 18-2 demolition of Boston, but the Rays spent six months proving they’re the best team in the American League — and Game 1 of this ALDS is the first real test of which version of New York actually showed up.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Rays -1.5
  • Why: Drew Rasmussen has been nearly unhittable since the All-Star break and Tampa Bay is 14-4 this season when he starts as the favorite
  • The number to watch: Rasmussen’s 2.07 ERA over his last 13 starts, third-lowest in MLB in that span

Tampa Bay won the AL East at 98-64, its best winning percentage since the 100-win 2021 club, and enters having led the division for 133 days — 93 of them in a row since late June. New York, meanwhile, finished 4.5 games back at 93-68 but looked every bit like a different team in the Wild Card round, sweeping the Red Sox by a combined 18-2 behind Cam Schlittler’s 10-strikeout Game 1 and a four-RBI night from Cody Bellinger in the clincher.

The head-to-head series was close. Tampa Bay won it 7-6, but New York took three of the final four meetings in the regular season’s last week, including a statement series that snapped some of the Rays’ momentum heading into October.

A Series Price That Hasn’t Budged

The Rays opened as home favorites and have stayed there with almost no line movement, which is notable given a Game 1 starter decision for New York that lingered until fight week. Tampa Bay sits around -134 to -141 on the moneyline depending on the book, with Gerrit Cole ultimately getting the ball for New York over Carlos Rodón. The run line has the Rays at -1.5 near +163 to +172, and the total is split between 6.5 and 7 runs depending on the sportsbook, with the market leaning slightly toward the over.

Tampa Bay was the hottest team in baseball down the stretch, and New York enters off a dominant sweep of its own — but the quality of competition looks very different.

Rasmussen’s Second-Half Takeover

The single biggest factor in this game is Drew Rasmussen, and the numbers are almost absurd. After the All-Star break, Tampa Bay went a perfect 12-0 in his 12 starts, covering the run line seven times — including a 6-1 win over these same Yankees in his final regular-season outing. He opened the second half 7-0 with 62 strikeouts and a 2.07 ERA, the third-lowest mark in the majors over that stretch, before finishing the year 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 172 innings.

Cole, by contrast, finished 10-9 with a 3.61 ERA in the regular season — solid, but a different tier than Rasmussen’s second half. He has a long track record of raising his game in October, so New York isn’t without an equalizer on the mound even on a down year by his standards. Ben Rice has been the Yankees’ postseason x-factor so far, with four hits, two homers and six RBIs in the Wild Card clincher, and his left-handed power bat profiles as a real threat against a Rays bullpen that leans heavily on sidearm and funky-angle arms like Bryan Baker and Kevin Kelly.

Fans heading down to St. Petersburg or looking to find tickets for the rest of this series should know the Trop was electric all September, and Tampa Bay’s home crowd gave the Rays a real edge in their 55-26 home mark this year.

Tampa Bay is 14-4 this season when Rasmussen starts as the moneyline favorite.

That kind of record isn’t a fluke. The Rays’ formula all year has been getting length and quiet efficiency from Rasmussen, then leaning on one of the league’s deepest bullpens to close it out. New York’s lineup has speed and thump in Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Rice, but Aaron Judge’s availability remains unresolved after a platelet-poor plasma injection in his calf, and manager Aaron Boone hasn’t offered a firm timetable for his return — a real void at the top of an otherwise dangerous order.

Prediction and Best Bet

Tampa Bay’s home record (55-26) and its ace’s recent form make this a tough series opener for New York to crash. The Yankees have the firepower to make it a game, especially if Cole settles in early, but Rasmussen against a lineup missing its most dangerous hitter tips the scale toward the Rays covering at home.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Rays 4, Yankees 2
  2. Best Bet: Rays -1.5

Betting the Rays on the run line gets better value than laying the heavier moneyline price, and Rasmussen’s second-half dominance makes that extra run look very catchable.
