The Yankees are chasing Tampa Bay in the AL East, and the Blue Jays are just trying to keep their season from slipping away entirely — that gap in stakes is exactly why New York should handle business at Rogers Centre.
Quick take:
- Pick: Yankees moneyline
- Why: Gerrit Cole’s command against a Toronto lineup missing Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s full health gives New York the pitching edge in a winnable spot
- The number to watch: Shane Bieber’s 5.48 ERA and 1.66 WHIP against a Yankees offense that just dropped 10 runs on Seattle
New York enters this series opener at 68-52, six games back of the Rays but very much alive in the wild card mix, while Toronto sits fourth in the division at 59-63 and 16.5 games out. The Yankees are up 4-3 in the season series so far, and this is the first of a three-game set that could either tighten the Jays’ grip on relevance or push them further toward sell mode.
New York opened as roughly a -148 favorite on the moneyline with Toronto sitting around +126, and the run line has the Yankees at -1.5 (+115) against the Jays’ +1.5 (-138). The total sits at 8, split evenly on both sides. Bettors tracking live MLB odds will notice that number has held fairly steady since the series opener was set. That’s a standard road-favorite line for a team with a better record and the better starter, but it’s not overwhelming — Toronto’s bullpen and lineup have enough thump to keep this from being a laugher on paper.
| Friday, August 14 at 7:16 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| New York Yankees | -1.5 (108) | -145 | O 8 (100) |
| Toronto Blue Jays | +1.5 (-137) | +135 | U 8 (-120) |
Both clubs have gone 6-4 over their last 10 games, but the shape of those stretches looks different — New York’s offense has come alive lately while Toronto has been grinding out close ones.

Gerrit Cole takes the ball at 6-5 with a 3.35 ERA and a sharp 1.08 WHIP across 80.2 innings, and he’s striking out better than a quarter of the hitters he faces. That’s a significant step up from what Toronto is sending out in Shane Bieber, who’s posted a 5.48 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in his return from injury — still working his way back to form with just 32 strikeouts in 42.2 innings.
Toronto’s lineup isn’t at full strength either. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has battled recurring hamstring tightness and has been in and out of the order, while Trey Yesavage is out for the season with a knee injury and Jameson Taillon is on the 15-day IL with forearm troubles. Ernie Clement has quietly been Toronto’s steadiest bat — 28 doubles, a triple, and nine homers — but this isn’t the deep, healthy Blue Jays lineup from earlier in the summer.
Ben Rice has hit 32 home runs and driven in 76 runs for New York this season, and he’s been the engine of a Yankees offense that torched Seattle for 14 runs across its last two games.
Trent Grisham has been a big part of that recent surge too, going 12-for-42 with five doubles and four home runs over his last 10 games, including a two-homer, four-RBI night against the Mariners on Wednesday. New York’s lineup is missing Aaron Judge (rib) and Cody Bellinger (hamstring), both out until at least Aug. 25, but the supporting cast has more than picked up the slack. That depth matters against a Toronto pitching staff that’s already stretched thin.
Alejandro Kirk has given the Jays some life behind the plate, hitting 12-for-34 with a homer over his past 10 games, and Toronto has actually been outscored by five runs over that stretch despite the 6-4 record — a sign their record is running a bit hotter than their underlying performance. New York, by contrast, has outscored opponents by three runs in the same window even with a modest .213 team average, showing up in timely spots rather than compiling empty stats.
Cole’s track record against a lineup that’s lost its top power threat for stretches, combined with Bieber still finding his footing, points toward a Yankees win here. Toronto can scratch out runs against a shaky bullpen night, but New York’s rotation edge should be the deciding factor in Game 1 of this series.
The pick:
Lay the price with Cole on the mound — this is the kind of pitching mismatch that shows up on the scoreboard, not just the stat sheet.
