USMNT World Cup Opener Sets All-Time Records With 24.9 Million Viewers Across All Platforms

The U.S. men’s national team delivered one of the biggest moments in American soccer history on June 11, defeating Paraguay 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to open the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dominant performance that was watched by a record 24.886 million viewers across all platforms. Fox Sports released the viewership data on June 14, confirming what the atmosphere inside a sold-out stadium and the engagement across social media had already suggested: this was a transformative sporting event for the United States.

English-language coverage on Fox and its streaming simulcasts averaged 15.986 million viewers — a 106 percent increase over the USMNT’s World Cup opener against Wales in 2022, which had drawn 7.763 million. Viewership peaked at close to 19 million during the final stages of the match. Telemundo contributed another 8.9 million Spanish-language viewers, setting a record as the largest Spanish-language audience for any U.S. World Cup match that did not feature Mexico. The game also set a new benchmark for English-language streaming of a USMNT match on Tubi, Fox’s free streaming platform.

Balogun’s Breakout Moment

Folarin Balogun was the star of the night, scoring twice and assisting on a third goal in the 4-1 rout. His combination of pace, finishing ability, and hold-up play gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a focal point in attack that overwhelmed Paraguay’s defensive structure. Balogun’s performance instantly elevated him into one of the tournament’s most-watched players and drew significant comparison to previous USMNT stars who emerged on the global stage through World Cup breakouts.

The final goal from Giovanni Reyna, scored in the closing minutes, pushed viewership to its peak as fans who had tuned in late stayed for the conclusion. The match was widely regarded as a statement game — not just a group-stage opener — and set expectations for how the team will approach its remaining group matches before the knockout rounds begin.

A Historic Shift in Soccer’s Place in American Sports

The 24.9 million combined figure more than doubles the viewership from the USMNT’s 2022 World Cup opener and is the largest audience ever recorded for a USMNT match in World Cup history. The comparison is stark: the 2022 game against Wales was considered a significant viewership event for soccer in the US at the time, drawing 7.763 million English-language viewers. The 2026 version drew more than double that number on English alone.

The increase reflects both the structural advantage of a home tournament — games in US primetime rather than early morning Qatar broadcasts — and the growth in the US soccer audience over the intervening years. The free availability of the match on Tubi expanded access significantly beyond traditional cable and satellite viewers, a distribution model that will be replicated throughout the tournament for group-stage and early knockout-round games.

For sports bettors, the USMNT’s strong opening performance has triggered a wave of activity in World Cup futures markets. Odds on the United States to advance from the group stage and progress into the knockout rounds shortened sharply following the Paraguay result. Betting interest on individual player props — particularly Balogun for Golden Boot — also spiked. Top sportsbooks including FanDuel and DraftKings have featured extensive World Cup betting markets throughout the tournament, with live in-game wagering options available for every USMNT match.
