The NBA Play-In Results Just Reshuffled the Bracket — Miami Is Eliminated, Portland Advances, and Here’s What It Means

Tuesday night’s NBA play-in games delivered exactly what the format promises: chaos. The Charlotte Hornets eliminated the Miami Heat 127-126 in overtime on a LaMelo Ball layup with 4.7 seconds left, with Miles Bridges sealing it with a block at the buzzer. Out west, Deni Avdija scored 41 points — including a go-ahead three-pointer with 16.1 seconds remaining — as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Phoenix Suns 114-110. Both results were genuine upsets, and both carry significant implications for the first-round playoff picture.

What Charlotte’s Win Actually Means

The Hornets are not done. By winning Tuesday, Charlotte stays alive and earns the right to play the loser of Wednesday’s 76ers-Magic game for the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed. That winner faces the No. 1 seed Detroit Pistons in the first round.

LaMelo Ball is the reason to believe Charlotte is for real. His 4.7-second game-winner was not luck — it was a player who has been building toward this kind of moment all season. The Hornets finished 44-38, quietly putting together one of the better second-half records in the Eastern Conference after starting the year with significant injury concerns. Against the Heat in overtime, they showed the mental composure that young teams often lack in elimination scenarios.

For betting purposes, the Hornets are massive underdogs against either the 76ers or Magic in the next play-in game, and they would be significant underdogs against Detroit in the first round. But the series odds will shift depending on how that second play-in unfolds. If Charlotte survives again, the Pistons series offers real long-shot value. A team that has now won back-to-back high-pressure play-in games carries a different profile than the number suggests.

Portland’s Bracket Spot and the Spurs Series

The Trail Blazers take the No. 7 seed in the West and face the No. 2 seed San Antonio Spurs in the first round. Portland’s win was genuinely impressive — Avdija with 41 points against a Suns team that was supposed to be the prohibitive favorite at -4.5. The Blazers trailed by 11 in the fourth quarter and found a way.

That said, the Spurs are a different level of opponent. San Antonio finished 62-20 behind Victor Wembanyama’s continued development and one of the best coaching staffs in the league. The Spurs are listed around -600 to -700 to win the series, with Portland somewhere in the +400 to +500 range depending on the book. Given how the Blazers won — on Avdija’s heroics against a shorter Suns rotation — the question for a seven-game series is whether Portland has enough depth and enough different offensive creation to sustain those moments over multiple games against a better-coached, more physically imposing opponent.

The Full Bracket Picture After Tuesday

The Western Conference picture is now mostly set. Oklahoma City drew the winner of the Clippers-Warriors play-in game for a first-round matchup, and Portland locks in against San Antonio regardless of how Wednesday goes. The Rockets host the injury-depleted Lakers starting Saturday. The Nuggets and Timberwolves also square off in what should be a physical Western Conference series with real competitive balance.

In the East, the Celtics and Pistons are waiting on Wednesday’s results. Boston will face either Philadelphia or Orlando as their No. 7 seed opponent. Detroit will face whoever emerges from the Charlotte-loser-of-7/8 game as their No. 8 opponent. The Pistons drew the better end of that deal — whoever they face will have played at least two high-pressure games in a short window, with limited rest.

The broader betting picture after Tuesday’s play-in games: Oklahoma City at -160 to win the Western Conference is still the cleanest line in the bracket. San Antonio at +320 represents the second-best value if you believe Wembanyama takes another step in the postseason. In the East, the Celtics at +155 to win the conference are worth serious consideration given how well Boston has played and the fact that their first-round draw looks manageable regardless of who comes out of Wednesday’s play-in. The next 48 hours will set the final bracket before the first-round series tips on Saturday.
