With Detroit fading from postseason contention this summer, the front office made the call that many around the league expected but few wanted to see actually happen: trading its ace rather than riding out a fringe playoff chase.

The Tigers didn’t come away empty-handed. In exchange for Skubal, Detroit received outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith. Hope was the Dodgers’ No. 5 organizational prospect and checked in at No. 25 on MLB Pipeline’s overall Top 100, giving Detroit a potential everyday outfield piece. Ryan, previously the Dodgers’ No. 7 prospect and No. 68 overall, adds a power arm with a chance to help at the major-league level relatively soon, while Smith, ranked No. 17 in the Dodgers’ system before the deal, rounds out the package as a longer-term developmental arm.

For a rental of Skubal’s caliber, evaluators around the league graded the return as a strong outcome for Detroit given the two Top-100 prospects included. Skubal is set to become a free agent after the World Series, and he was already playing this season on a record $32 million arbitration salary. The Dodgers will cover roughly $9.5 million of that deal for the remainder of the year and now hold exclusive negotiating rights that could matter if they try to work out an extension before he hits the open market. Updated market-implied probabilities have Los Angeles sitting around 40 percent to win it all, with the Yankees a distant second in the +600 range and the Brewers — the team the Dodgers beat out for Skubal — rounding out the top tier near +900.

On the other side of the deal, Detroit’s playoff markets softened as expected. Projection models that had the Tigers hovering in the mid-to-high 20s percent range for a postseason berth before the deadline dropped them into the high teens to low 20s after also moving Casey Mize and other pieces. Detroit remains mathematically alive in the AL wild-card race, but the drop illustrates how much value bettors and models alike placed on having a true ace at the top of a rotation down the stretch.
