Rockets vs. Nuggets NBA Summer League Prediction: Bruce Thornton Debuts Against Denver’s Veteran Roster

Houston's Bruce Thornton makes his Summer League debut against one of the oldest and most experienced rosters in Las Vegas, Denver's veteran-laden squad.

The Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets meet at Cox Pavilion on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, another entry in Day 2 of NBA Summer League action from Las Vegas. This is Summer League basketball, not the regular season, so both teams are icing rosters full of rookies, two-way players and G League veterans rather than their established stars. Houston’s group centers around its lone 2026 draft pick, while Denver arrives with arguably the most experienced, and oldest, roster in the entire event.

What to Watch Instead of a Betting Line

Odds markets for this particular Summer League game remain limited as of Friday, which is standard for most July 10 matchups before the tournament bracket portion of the event begins later in the week. Fans wanting to track meaningful betting markets on either franchise should monitor Live NBA Odds as regular-season lines start rolling out closer to training camp. For now, the storylines here revolve far more around player evaluation than point spreads.

Bruce Thornton Debuts as Denver Brings Experience

Houston’s Summer League roster is headlined by Bruce Thornton, the Ohio State guard the Rockets traded up to select with the No. 31 overall pick, the first selection of the second round. Thornton was a steady, high-IQ college point guard, and after a strong showing already in early workouts, expectations are high for his Summer League debut in a Rockets jersey. He’s joined by two-way players Tristan Newton and Isaiah Crawford, both looking to solidify their standing within the organization, along with undrafted signees like Oscar Cluff and Khadeen Copeland who are hoping to catch the Rockets’ attention on a 12-man roster that is one of the smaller groups in the event.

Denver, by contrast, built a Summer League roster with a notably different approach than most of the league. According to reports out of Colorado, the Nuggets’ group features six players 25 or older and not a single player younger than 22, making it possibly the oldest Summer League roster in league history. The headliners are Denver’s two second-round picks from this year’s draft, Trevon Brazile out of Arkansas and Bryce Hopkins out of St. John’s, who are 23 and 24 years old respectively. Denver assistant coach JJ Barea leads a group that also includes former Colorado star KJ Simpson, back after closing last season on a two-way deal with the Nuggets, and TJ Bamba, who has local ties after attending Lincoln High School before a college career that spanned Washington State, Villanova and Oregon. Denver also brings in Mark Sears, who went undrafted before signing a two-way deal with Milwaukee last year, and Jahmi’us Ramsey, a 2020 second-round pick who has NBA experience with both Sacramento and Toronto.

The contrast in team-building approaches here is stark. Houston is leaning on a true rookie in Thornton to be the offensive engine on a thin roster, while Denver is fielding a squad of older, more seasoned professionals who understand the pace and physicality of the pro game far better than most Summer League participants. That experience gap could be the deciding factor in a game where Houston’s youth may show in the fourth quarter.

Prediction and Best Bet

Denver’s roster construction, built around players in their mid-to-late 20s with real professional or overseas experience, gives the Nuggets a structural edge in a game that often rewards poise and physical readiness over pure upside. Houston’s Thornton-led group has talent, but a thin 12-man roster leaning on a true rookie point guard could struggle with the pace Denver’s older group is capable of dictating.

  • Prediction: Denver Nuggets 90, Houston Rockets 83
  • Best Bet: Denver Nuggets -4.5 (where available)

Denver’s unusually experienced Summer League roster should translate into better composure and shot selection over 40 minutes, especially against a Houston group relying heavily on an unproven rookie point guard to create offense. That professional seasoning gives the Nuggets the edge in this one.
