Reds vs. Diamondbacks Prediction: Eduardo Rodriguez Has the Edge Over Cincinnati’s Cold Bats

Eduardo Rodriguez has been nearly unhittable all season, and now he gets a Reds lineup that’s hitting .194 over its last 10 games.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Diamondbacks -154
  • Why: Eduardo Rodriguez’s 2.71 ERA against a Reds offense in a serious cold spell
  • The number to watch: Cincinnati is batting .194 as a team over its last 10 games

The Reds roll into Chase Field on Friday sitting at 61-67, 18 games back in the NL Central and fading fast — they’ve dropped four of their last six and been outscored by 16 runs over that stretch. Arizona, meanwhile, is quietly hanging around at 67-61, a game up on the wild card cutoff and coming off a series win in Boston. This is the first of a three-game set and the fourth meeting between these two clubs this season, with the first three all decided by two runs or fewer.

Cincinnati’s lineup just hasn’t shown up lately. Sal Stewart leads the Reds with a .259 average and 27 home runs on the year, but even he can’t drag this group out of its slump on his own, and Matt McLain’s modest 8-for-33 over his last 10 games isn’t exactly a spark either.

Why Vegas Isn’t Buying the Upset

The line opened with Arizona as a healthy favorite and has held firm at -154, with Cincinnati sitting at +128 and the total set at 8.5 runs. Books are leaning hard on the pitching mismatch here — Eduardo Rodriguez is 12-4 with a 2.71 ERA and 106 strikeouts, easily Arizona’s best arm all year, while Nick Lodolo carries a much shakier 4.52 ERA and a 3-2 record for Cincinnati. When the market sees a front-line starter against a struggling offense, the number moves fast, and this one hasn’t budged much since it opened.

Recent Form

Neither team is playing its best baseball right now, but the gap between them has widened over the last 10 days.

Rodriguez’s Command Meets a Punchless Lineup

Rodriguez has been the steadiest starter in Arizona’s rotation all year, and he’s getting a Reds team that ranks among the league’s most strikeout-prone bats against right-handed pitching — not exactly Rodriguez’s specialty as a lefty, but Cincinnati’s swing-and-miss issues have shown up against arms of both hands lately. Corbin Carroll has quietly put together one of the better all-around seasons in the league for Arizona, hitting .246 with 18 home runs, 17 steals, and an .830 OPS, giving the Diamondbacks a table-setter who can also do damage.

Nolan Arenado has heated up at exactly the right time, going 10-for-38 with four home runs over his last 10 games. That kind of power surge in the middle of the order changes the math for a Reds pitching staff that’s already without Hunter Greene for the season and dealing with multiple other arms on the injured list.

Cincinnati is hitting just .194 as a team over its last 10 games — a stretch that has coincided with four losses in six.

That kind of offensive drought is brutal timing against a starter of Rodriguez’s caliber. When a lineup can’t string together hits even against replacement-level arms, facing a pitcher averaging better than a strikeout an inning becomes a real problem. Arizona’s own offense hasn’t been dominant of late either, hitting .251 with a 4.30 ERA over its last 10, but they’ve still managed to outscore opponents in that span — a much healthier sign than what Cincinnati is showing.

Prediction and Best Bet

Arizona’s pitching advantage is too significant to fade here, especially with Cincinnati’s bats this cold. The Diamondbacks have the better arm, the better recent form, and the platform advantage of pitching at home in front of a crowd that’s had plenty to cheer about with the wild card race tightening.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Diamondbacks 5, Reds 2
  2. Best Bet: Diamondbacks on the moneyline

Rodriguez has been Arizona’s most reliable arm in a rotation that’s dealt with heavy injury attrition, and this is precisely the matchup where that reliability should show up on the scoreboard.
