Cam Skattebo is expected to return as the New York Giants’ lead running back Sunday at the Houston Texans, one week after he was benched and finished without a single touch in a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the expected change, and coach John Harbaugh said earlier in the week that Skattebo would carry a bigger load.
The backfield shake-up comes alongside a quarterback decision. J.J. McCarthy starts against Houston and, according to Harbaugh, is the Giants’ quarterback for the foreseeable future, including after the team’s bye week. The Giants (3-2-1) sit atop a down NFC East, while the Texans are 2-4.
Skattebo’s demotion traces back to ball security. He lost a fumble on the Washington Commanders’ 24-yard line in overtime of the Week 5 game, a 27-27 tie, just as the Giants were in range for a potential game-winning field goal. Before that mistake, he had rushed 13 times for 59 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards, including 40 of his 71 scrimmage yards in the extra period. For the season he has fumbled four times and lost one, and he has 81 carries for 294 yards (3.6 yards per carry) and one rushing touchdown.
Against the Saints, the Giants went with Najee Harris to start, and Skattebo stayed on the sideline. Tyrone Tracy Jr. scored a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown, and Devin Singletary added 33 yards on five touches. Harris managed two yards on four carries and was released on Tuesday, October 20, trimming the rotation to three backs. Skattebo took first-team reps in practice on Wednesday, a sign the staff was moving back toward him.
Harbaugh did not promise a one-man show. After the Saints game he said he does not like rotating backs and that someone needs to step up and be the back, and he has also said carries are earned. Several reports expect Skattebo to share the work with Tracy and Singletary, so a “lead back” label does not necessarily mean a full workload.
McCarthy replaces Jameis Winston, who started the previous four games while Jaxson Dart was out with a knee injury. Winston threw for 152 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions against the Saints before being pulled. McCarthy then entered and went 11 of 21 for 243 yards in the fourth quarter, leading three scoring drives and leading the team with 26 rushing yards, despite New York trailing by 24 points. ESPN noted it was the second-most passing yards in a fourth quarter by a non-starter in the past 25 years.
Harbaugh said the choice came down to what gives the team the best chance to win, and that McCarthy has picked up offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s system quickly. For Skattebo, a quarterback who can also run adds a different look to the backfield, though the Giants are heavy underdogs and likely to chase points for much of the afternoon.
For readers new to betting, a point spread is the margin the favorite is expected to win by, and a prop bet is a wager on one player’s individual performance rather than the final score. Both markets tell a clear story here. Houston opened as a 5.5-point favorite, and the line has since climbed to Texans -10.5 at most books, with the moneyline around Houston -520 and New York +390 at one book on Friday. The total sits at 42.5 points, down from an opening number of 43.5.
The player props reflect the uncertainty about Skattebo’s role. His rushing yards line is posted in the high 20s to around 30 (28.5 at some books, 30.5 at others), which is modest for a back returning to a lead role. That number reflects both the crowded backfield and a Houston defense that is giving up 83.0 rushing yards per game. Skattebo has exceeded 31.5 rushing yards in five of his last six games, averaging 49.0 yards per game over that span, so the market is pricing in a smaller share of touches or a game script that pulls the Giants away from the run.
His anytime touchdown odds are roughly +357 to +370, which implies about a 21 percent chance of scoring, and his first touchdown price is around +1800 to +1900. That puts him behind several Houston skill players and just ahead of Tracy at +455. One projection model gives Skattebo a 17.9 percent chance of scoring and roughly 30 rushing yards, close to where the market sits. On the Houston side, Jo’Quavious Marks has seen his rushing line move from 55.5 to 61.5 yards.
The key variable for any Skattebo prop is touches, not talent. If Harbaugh keeps a three-man committee, the yardage line is a near coin flip. If the Giants fall behind early, as the spread suggests, passing downs could cut into his carries. Fumbles remain the other risk, since another turnover could end his day quickly.
The bigger takeaway for new bettors is that a headline like “expected to resume lead role” is already built into the price. Props adjust fast once news breaks, so the more useful question is whether the number matches how many touches a player is likely to see. All odds and lines are subject to change before kickoff at 1:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
