Raiders vs Texans TNF Preview: Odds, Prediction, Best Bet

Thursday Night Football is back for Week 2 of the preseason, and this one comes with a little extra intrigue as the Las Vegas Raiders head to Reliant Stadium to face the Houston Texans. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 20, and the game will air nationally on ESPN. Both teams enter 0-1 after rough Week 1 outings, which means Week 2 is less about the scoreboard and more about answering real questions: who’s making the roster, who’s grabbing a starting job, and which team looks more prepared for the regular season.

Where the Line Stands Heading Into Kickoff

The odds on this one have actually moved during the week, which is worth noting for anyone following along. Early in the week, several sportsbooks had Las Vegas as a slight favorite at -1.5. By game week, the number flipped at some books, with Houston now favored by 1.5 on their home field. ESPN’s listed line has Houston at -1.5 with a total around 40.5, while other shops like BetUS have the Texans favored on the moneyline at -135 with Las Vegas getting +115. A few books are still holding closer to the original number, with totals ranging anywhere from 37.5 up to 40.5 depending on where you look.

That kind of line movement isn’t unusual for preseason football, where public information about who’s actually playing — and for how long — trickles in throughout the week. Bettors tracking live NFL odds throughout the week will have noticed the number shift more than once before kickoff.

The betting market data site Kalshi has Houston priced as a 57% favorite to win outright, with Las Vegas sitting at 45%. For context on just how far off the Raiders’ season outlook is right now, Kalshi’s futures market has them at only a 6% chance to win the AFC West this year — a reminder that Thursday’s result matters far less than what it reveals about the roster.

Both Teams Are Still Figuring Things Out

Neither team left Week 1 particularly encouraged. The Raiders fell 27-14 to the Arizona Cardinals, though the headline from that game had nothing to do with the final score. First-round rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner, made his NFL debut under new head coach Klint Kubiak and threw a touchdown pass in his first appearance. It’s early, but how Mendoza and the rest of the Raiders’ passing offense look on Thursday will be one of the more closely watched storylines of the night, especially with a full season of uncertainty already surrounding this roster.

Houston’s Week 1 was arguably worse on paper. The Texans were blown out 27-7 at home by the Los Angeles Chargers, managing just one scoring drive with backup quarterback Davis Mills running the offense — he finished 9-of-15 for 82 yards. The bigger issue was on the injury front. Third-string quarterback Graham Mertz suffered a torn ACL on a non-contact scramble and landed on season-ending injured reserve, forcing Houston to sign veteran Brett Rypien just days later. Beyond the quarterback room, several Texans skill-position players are banged up heading into Thursday, including receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel (both questionable) and tight end Brevin Jordan, who’s dealing with a knee issue. Wide receiver Tank Dell remains sidelined as he continues working back from a serious knee injury.

With so many bodies in flux for Houston, expect backups and roster-bubble players to see extended run again — which, if you’re a fantasy player or just like scouting depth pieces, makes this one worth flipping on even without the regular-season stakes. It’s also a reminder of how far both franchises still are from the Super Bowl conversation this year.

What to Watch as Roster Cuts Approach

Preseason Week 2 typically means more meaningful snaps for projected starters compared to Week 1’s brief look, and final roster cuts are now on the horizon. For the Raiders, that means a longer look at how the offensive line holds up in protection and whether the defense — which struggled to contain Arizona’s offense — can clean things up against a Texans team that, injuries aside, still has plenty of talent on the roster. For Houston, it’s about finding answers at receiver and settling the pecking order at running back, where a few bubble names are fighting for a roster spot before the numbers get cut down.

Prediction and Best Bet

This has the feel of a game that stays low-scoring given how banged up both offenses are and how limited the starters’ snap counts are likely to be. Houston gets the slight nod at home, particularly with the line having moved in their favor as the week has progressed, but don’t expect a blowout either way.

  • Prediction: Houston Texans 20, Las Vegas Raiders 17
  • Best Bet: Texans on the moneyline

Home-field advantage, a full week to prepare, and market momentum all point toward Houston as the safer side on Thursday, even with both rosters far from full strength.
