Patriots-Browns Preseason Finale Is All About Roster Bubbles: Who Needs a Big Night at Huntington Bank Field

For most of the players suiting up Thursday night in Cleveland, the scoreboard is the least important part of the evening. The Patriots wrap up their preseason at Huntington Bank Field against the Browns at 8:00 p.m. ET, streaming on Prime Video, and for a long list of roster hopefuls on both sides, this is the last chance to put anything on tape before final cuts.

New England arrives at 1-0-1, having tied the Colts and then knocked off the Eagles 24-21 behind a strong summer from its backup quarterbacks. Cleveland is still hunting for its first win after being outscored by a combined 65-17 across losses to Chicago and Buffalo. Records aside, both coaching staffs have real decisions to make this weekend, and this game is the last evidence they will get.

The Fight for Roster Spots Nobody Is Talking About

While the quarterback situation tends to dominate headlines, some of the most consequential battles Thursday are happening in the trenches and in the secondary. Cleveland has already locked in cornerbacks Denzel Ward, Tyson Campbell and Myles Harden, along with safeties Grant Delpit, Ronnie Hickman and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren. That leaves a genuine scramble for the final defensive back spots between Christopher Edmonds, Donovan McMillon and veteran special-teamer Daniel Thomas, none of whom have separated from the pack through two games.

Linebacker and Edge Battles Down the Stretch

Cleveland’s linebacker room has its own intrigue, with Nathaniel Watson trying to lock down a depth role behind Carson Schwesinger and Quincy Williams. Up front, undrafted rookies Khordae Sydnor and Logan Fano are competing for defensive end reps that could translate into a practice squad stash if not an outright roster spot, and both need splash plays against a Patriots offensive line that will be without several regulars.

New England’s defensive question marks are smaller in number but no less real. The offensive line battle between Marcus Bryant and rookie Dametrious Crownover for a swing tackle job has been one of the tighter position fights of camp, and the tight end room behind Hunter Henry and Eli Raridon is unsettled after veteran Julian Hill’s season-ending knee injury opened up a competition involving Jack Westover.

Quarterbacks Still Matter, Just Not the Ones You’d Expect

Deshaun Watson has been named Cleveland’s Week 1 starter, and both he and Shedeur Sanders are expected to sit out entirely Thursday, handing the offense to Dillon Gabriel and sixth-round rookie Taylen Green for the full 60 minutes. That is a significant workload for two players who have struggled to find rhythm this summer, and it puts real pressure on Gabriel in particular to show something before roster cuts.

New England, by contrast, gets another extended look at Tommy DeVito and rookie Behren Morton, who have combined to lead the Patriots to a strong offensive summer without starter Drake Maye on the field. DeVito’s 69-yard touchdown throw to Kyle Williams against Philadelphia and Morton’s game-winning drive in the same contest have made the backup quarterback battle in New England one of the more encouraging storylines of camp.

Prediction and Best Bet

Cleveland’s offensive line and receiver corps have had trouble creating easy completions all preseason, and asking Gabriel and Green to do it against a motivated Patriots defense feels like a tough ask. New England’s depth at quarterback should carry the day again.

  • Prediction: Patriots 23, Browns 14
  • Best Bet: Patriots to cover the spread

The gap in backup quarterback play has been the story of this preseason for both teams, and until Cleveland’s Gabriel-Green tandem proves otherwise, that trend should hold up one more time.
