Mammoth vs. Golden Knights Game 2 Prediction: 2026 NHL Playoffs

The Utah Hockey Club — rebranded as the Mammoth for the 2025-26 season — came into Las Vegas for Game 1 of their first-ever NHL playoff series and showed they belong at this level. They led the Golden Knights for much of the game before a stunning third-period collapse allowed Vegas to rally for three unanswered goals and a 4-2 victory. Nic Dowd’s go-ahead goal at 7:20 of the third period was the dagger, and now Utah faces the challenge of regrouping on the road for Game 2 at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday night at 9:30 PM ET.

This series pits two teams with very different stories. Utah finished at 43-32-6 with 92 points in the franchise’s inaugural year and won a playoff spot in remarkable fashion. The Golden Knights were 39-26-17, won the Pacific Division championship for the second straight season, and are now operating under new head coach John Tortorella, who took over in March and has not lost a regulation game since March 24. Vegas is a battle-tested playoff organization that knows how to close out games.

Vegas Installed as Solid Favorites on Home Ice

The Golden Knights open as -162 favorites for Game 2, with Utah at +134. The over/under of 5.5 suggests both teams expect a defensive, grinding game, which fits the styles of both squads. At -162, Vegas is a meaningful favorite but not an overwhelming one. The Mammoth’s regular season head-to-head record against the Knights — winning two of three, including a 5-1 and 4-0 blowout — shows this is not a team that is scared of Vegas, even if Game 1 did not go their way.

Tortorella’s Effect and Utah’s Young Stars

John Tortorella transformed this Vegas team when he took over in March. Since his arrival, the Golden Knights have not lost a single regulation game, a remarkable run that suggests a team that found its identity at exactly the right moment. Tortorella’s teams are typically disciplined, hard-working, and difficult to play against — the kind of structure that amplifies playoff hockey’s physical demands.

Ivan Barbashev has been a key driver for Vegas with 38 assists and 63 points, and Nic Dowd proved his clutch credentials with the game-winning goal in Game 1. The Golden Knights do not rely on a single superstar to carry them — they win with depth, structure, and execution. That is a formula that tends to work in playoff series that go beyond four or five games.

Utah’s star power is real and should not be dismissed. Dylan Guenther scored 40 goals and 73 points during the regular season, and Nick Schmaltz added 33 goals and 74 points. These are legitimate offensive contributors who can change a game. The Mammoth led for large stretches of Game 1 and were the better team at even strength for much of the contest — the collapse in the third was a lesson, not a verdict on the series.

The regular season history between these teams tells an interesting story. Utah won the two games that mattered most, including the dominant 5-1 and 4-0 victories. Vegas’s 4-1 win shows they can beat the Mammoth convincingly as well. These teams know each other, and Utah knows how to score against this Vegas team. The first-playoff-appearance nerves from Game 1 should be largely gone by Tuesday night.

Prediction and Best Bet

Vegas holds the edge in Game 2 based on their current trajectory under Tortorella, their home ice advantage, and the psychological boost that comes from rallying to win Game 1. The Golden Knights are a proven playoff team with a system that controls games, and they will be motivated to replicate the third-period dominance that won them the series opener. Utah will compete hard, but winning back-to-back road games against this Vegas team is a steep ask for a playoff newcomer.

  • Prediction: Golden Knights 3, Mammoth 2
  • Best Bet: Golden Knights -162 moneyline

Vegas at home under Tortorella is the play. The Golden Knights have not lost in regulation in over a month, they won a third-period rally in Game 1, and they have the experience edge in a first-round playoff series. Utah will fight, but the combination of home ice and Vegas’s current form gives the Knights the slight edge they need to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.
