Iowa vs Washington Preview: Odds, Prediction, Best Bet

Iowa heads into enemy territory on a short week, and Washington is desperate to stop the bleeding. The No. 20 Hawkeyes (4-1) travel to Husky Stadium to face Washington (3-2) on Friday night, October 9, with kickoff at 9 p.m. ET on FOX/FS1. It’s a game loaded with intrigue: a ranked team reeling from a blowout loss, a once-unbeaten home team that’s lost two straight, and a quarterback injury that could flip the entire outcome.

Why Washington Is Favored Over a Ranked Team

Despite Iowa carrying a national ranking into Seattle, the betting market has Washington as the favorite. Most sportsbooks have the Huskies at -3.5 (with some lines as tight as -2.5), and the total sits at 41.5. Washington’s moneyline is in the -150 to -165 range, meaning bettors see this as closer to a 60% win probability for the home team, ranking be damned.

That’s a notable vote of confidence for a Washington squad that started 3-0 before dropping back-to-back games to Minnesota (27-24) and then-No. 18 USC (25-21), both one-possession losses. Iowa, meanwhile, is coming off a rough 31-14 defeat to No. 5 Ohio State in which the Hawkeyes were thoroughly outgained. Books are essentially betting that Iowa’s bigger problem — a banged-up starting quarterback — outweighs Washington’s two-game skid.

It’s also worth noting the betting trends: Washington is just 1-4 against the spread this season, while Iowa sits at 3-2 ATS. Books are backing the team that’s actually been worse for bettors lately, which tells you how much weight the market is putting on Iowa’s QB situation.

The Quarterback Question Looming Over Everything

The single biggest storyline here is Iowa starter Hank Brown’s health. Brown has been efficient and steady this season, throwing for 832 yards with five touchdowns against just one interception across Iowa’s first five games. But he left the Ohio State game with a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder and has been officially listed as questionable all week.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz has been blunt about it, telling reporters the team “can’t count on him” being ready and that playing Brown through it might be “shortsighted.” If Brown can’t go, or isn’t the same player even if he suits up, backup Jeremy Hecklinski — who took over after Brown went down against the Buckeyes — would get the start, with Jimmy Sullivan next in line. That’s a significant drop-off in experience and rhythm for an Iowa offense that will need points on the road against a team that just lost a shootout to USC.

On the other side, Washington’s offense runs through quarterback Demond Williams Jr., though he’s coming off a quieter outing in the USC loss (198 passing yards, one touchdown). Williams was electric in Washington’s 3-0 start, carrying the offense through wins over Washington State, Utah State, and Eastern Washington, but the Huskies’ two Big Ten losses have both come with the passing game stalling in the fourth quarter. The Huskies have had their own late-game execution issues in both losses, so this isn’t a case of one team clearly playing better — it’s two flawed teams searching for answers, with Iowa’s answer complicated by injury.

Context matters here too. Washington’s two defeats weren’t blowouts — a 27-24 home loss to Minnesota and a 25-21 road loss to a ranked USC team that scored the go-ahead touchdown on a fumble return. Those are the kind of losses that can flip a team’s confidence either direction: either Washington learns from the close calls, or the pattern of letting winnable games slip continues under the lights Friday. Iowa’s loss to Ohio State was a different animal entirely — a game the Hawkeyes trailed throughout and never threatened to climb back into, which is part of why the shorter week to prepare for a cross-country trip feels like a real disadvantage.

A Rare Trip to Seattle

Adding to the novelty, Iowa hasn’t played at Husky Stadium in 63 years, so there’s no recent head-to-head history or home-field familiarity to lean on for either side. Expect a chilly, damp Pacific Northwest atmosphere — forecasts call for temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s with light rain and modest wind, conditions that could matter if either team leans on the passing game in flux.

Prediction and Best Bet

This game hinges almost entirely on Brown’s shoulder. If he plays through it in any diminished capacity, Iowa’s offense likely sputters against a Washington defense that’s had its moments. If Hecklinski starts cold on the road in a loud, wet environment, that favors the home team even more. Washington’s two losses came by a combined seven points to quality Big Ten and Pac-12/B1G crossover competition, suggesting this team isn’t nearly as shaky as 1-4 ATS might imply — just unlucky in close spots.

  • Prediction: Washington 24, Iowa 20
  • Best Bet: Washington -3.5

Washington’s two losses this year came down to the final possession, and getting back home in front of their own crowd against an Iowa team facing real uncertainty behind center gives the Huskies the edge bettors need to finally snap their ATS funk. For bettors tracking live lines and college football odds all week, this is the kind of spot where line movement before kickoff could say a lot about Brown’s final status.
