3 NHL Shots on Goal Props to Back Tonight: Guenther, Thompson, Kucherov (October 8)

Shots on goal props are one of the most beatable markets in hockey betting if you know where to look — volume shooters facing leaky defenses tend to hit their number more often than the sportsbooks want you to think. Tonight’s NHL slate hands us three players who are doing exactly that right now: lighting the lamp, racking up attempts, and drawing matchups that favor more pucks on net, not fewer.

All three of these picks lean on recent volume that’s been remarkably consistent through the first stretch of the season. Here’s the breakdown on each, and why the shots on goal overs make sense tonight.

Dylan Guenther Over 2.5 Shots on Goal vs. Boston

Dylan Guenther has been one of the most dangerous forwards in hockey through Utah’s first four games, and the shot volume backs it up. He’s averaging 4.25 shots on goal per game this season and has gone over 2.5 in three of his four outings, including a five-shot effort in Utah’s 6-0 blowout of Chicago. He also leads the Mammoth outright in unblocked shot attempts with 23, which tells you this isn’t a one-game hot streak — he’s getting to his spots consistently, especially with the man advantage, where he’s already racked up three goals and five points on the power play alone this season.

The matchup only helps his case. Boston is allowing close to five shots on goal per game to right wingers this season, exactly the kind of leak Guenther is built to exploit. The Bruins have also dropped back-to-back games by 4-1 scorelines, a sign their defense hasn’t settled in yet. With Utah playing from the road but riding a 3-1 start and averaging five goals a game in their wins, there’s no reason to expect Guenther’s shot volume to slow down in Boston.

Tage Thompson Over 2.5 Shots on Goal vs. Dallas

Tage Thompson’s line at most books sits at 3.5 shots on goal, but even using the more conservative 2.5 number, this is about as safe a shot-volume bet as the board offers tonight. Thompson has gone over 3.5 shots in all three of his games this season — a perfect 3-for-3 — and he’s doing it with real teeth behind it, averaging 5.7 shots on goal per game. He put up nine shots in Buffalo’s overtime win over Minnesota earlier this week, a reminder that when Thompson gets rolling, the volume can get out of hand fast.

There’s also real value attached to Thompson beyond just the shot total. His anytime goal scorer odds sit at +165, and he’s already found the back of the net in two of his three games this season — a 67% clip that lines up with his career trend of coming out of the gate hot. Buffalo is favored on the moneyline tonight against a Dallas team that’s off to a shaky 1-2 start, which gives Thompson every incentive to keep shooting early and often rather than sitting back in a defensive shell.

Nikita Kucherov Over 2.5 Shots on Goal vs. Minnesota

Nikita Kucherov is the name on this list that needs no introduction, and while his shot totals can fluctuate game to game given how often he’s setting up teammates instead of shooting himself, the clearance rates tell the real story. Over his last 20 games, Kucherov has recorded at least one shot on goal 100% of the time, cleared two or more shots 70% of the time, and cleared three or more shots 65% of the time. That’s an extraordinarily stable floor for a player who racked up 44 goals in 76 games a season ago and is already off to a four-point start to open this year.

Tampa Bay is favored at home tonight against a Minnesota team that enters the night 2-0-1, and Kucherov has already shown he’s engaged offensively, logging shifts well over 22 minutes a night and factoring into every goal the Lightning have scored so far. With Tampa Bay the favorite and likely controlling possession for long stretches, Kucherov should see enough offensive-zone time to clear this number again.

Today’s Shots on Goal Edge

All three of these forwards check the same boxes: heavy shot volume over their last several games, a matchup that doesn’t project to slow them down, and a role on a team that should be playing with the puck tonight. Here’s the full card:

  • Dylan Guenther (UTA) OVER 2.5 Shots on Goal vs. Boston
  • Tage Thompson (BUF) OVER 2.5 Shots on Goal vs. Dallas
  • Nikita Kucherov (TBL) OVER 2.5 Shots on Goal vs. Minnesota

Check your live NHL odds before locking anything in, since shots props can move closer to puck drop. But based on recent volume and tonight’s matchups, all three of these players have a real shot at clearing the number comfortably.
