Missouri’s DJ Jones Receives Heart Transplant as 4-1 Tigers Ride Historic Florida Win Into CFP Futures Conversation

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz announced Thursday that true freshman offensive tackle Johnnie “DJ” Jones received a heart transplant Wednesday night, and that the 18-year-old is recovering after a successful surgery. The news caps an emotional week for the Tigers program, coming just two days after Drinkwitz revealed Jones had been placed on the heart transplant list.

“We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible,” Drinkwitz said in a statement. “Please continue to keep DJ, his family, the donor family, and his caregivers in your prayers as he begins the recovery process.” Jones, a four-star offensive line prospect out of Venice High School on Florida’s Gulf Coast, had not yet appeared in a game for Missouri this season.

How Jones’ Condition Was Discovered

Missouri’s medical staff first identified an issue with Jones’ heart during routine freshman intake testing over the summer. After two weeks of monitoring without the resolution they were looking for, the staff referred him to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, for further evaluation. Doctors there discovered what Drinkwitz described as a far more serious problem, and last week the team learned Jones had been placed on the heart transplant list. Speaking to reporters earlier in the week, an emotional Drinkwitz said Jones “does need help in a hurry” and asked Missouri fans to keep him in their thoughts. That help came Wednesday night, and the Tigers have said they will continue to provide updates on his recovery as it progresses.

A Program on the Rise Amid the Emotion

The news lands at a moment when Missouri football has rarely had more momentum. The Tigers are 4-1 and ranked No. 14 in the AP poll after a 45-17 blowout of then-No. 8 Florida on Oct. 3 — Missouri’s first win over a top-10 ranked SEC opponent since 2013. Quarterback Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns while running back Jamal Roberts posted a career-high 211 rushing yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers piled up 560 yards of total offense without a turnover. The win sent Florida tumbling eight spots in the rankings and pushed Missouri up 11 spots, the second-largest jump by any team so far this season. Drinkwitz noted that Jones, despite being hospitalized, watched the Florida win from his hospital room — a detail that has resonated throughout the Mizzou football community as the Tigers have rallied around him. Missouri now turns its attention to Texas A&M on Saturday, with a brutal upcoming stretch against Ole Miss, Texas and Georgia still to come this season.

What It Means for Missouri’s Market Outlook

Missouri opened the season with a 6.5-win total, and oddsmakers had been cautious given the program’s back-to-back declines from its 10-win 2023 season. The Florida result has already moved the needle: Missouri’s game-by-game lines have shifted favorably, and the Tigers’ College Football Playoff futures — which sat as long as +700 earlier in the season — have tightened into the +500 range at some books following the win. Missouri’s SEC championship futures have also strengthened, with the Tigers now being quoted in the +3500 range at some outlets after opening closer to +4000. None of that market movement is about Jones’ health, and it shouldn’t be — but the timing is notable. A program that spent the past two seasons trending in the wrong direction now has a signature win, a rising ranking, and a national storyline that extends well beyond the scoreboard. With Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Texas and Georgia all still on the schedule, how Missouri performs over the next month will determine whether this 4-1 start — and the attention that has come with it — translates into a real run at the postseason bracket bettors are already starting to price in.
