FanDuel Sportsbook sent a personalized video message from Phillies star Bryce Harper to a VIP customer who wagered $18.5 million on the platform, a Philadelphia Inquirer investigation has revealed. Terry Thompson, of Montgomery County, received the Thanksgiving 2024 clip, in which Harper greeted him by name and mentioned his young son, shortly before Thompson was diagnosed with a gambling addiction.
Thompson’s betting history traces back to fall 2020, when he placed his first wager on the Philadelphia Eagles through FanDuel. He soon moved into microbetting, placing rapid wagers on individual plays and quarters. Over the following years, Thompson wagered more than $22 million combined across FanDuel and DraftKings, losing over $1.8 million and eventually checking into a psychiatric facility after contemplating suicide.
A lawsuit filed in March by the Public Health Advocacy Institute alleges FanDuel assigned Thompson a personal VIP host who sent gifts including a $500 bottle of champagne and tickets to Eagles, Flyers and Sixers games. Court records show that after Thompson took losses in 2021, the host reportedly sent betting credits along with encouragement to keep wagering, and by January 2023 was offering Super Bowl LVII tickets and hotel accommodations in Arizona.
The Harper video, in which the two-time NL MVP says, “Hey, Terry. What’s up, brother? Your host Bryttanni from FanDuel wanted to make sure your Thanksgiving was extra special,” was one of several personalized rewards FanDuel used to keep Thompson engaged. There is no indication Harper has a formal endorsement relationship with FanDuel or knew about Thompson’s addiction when the message was recorded.
The suit against FanDuel and DraftKings claims both companies designed products to maximize compulsive betting behavior, citing constant push notifications promoting microbets and increasingly personal outreach that continued even after signs of financial distress became apparent. Thompson is one of two named plaintiffs, both alleging the sportsbooks simulated personal friendships to keep them betting larger sums.
The case lands amid intensifying scrutiny of sportsbook VIP programs nationwide, as lawmakers and public health advocates question whether the industry’s retention tactics for high-volume bettors have crossed into predatory territory. Bettors struggling with compulsive wagering can find help through responsible gambling resources. Thompson is currently undergoing treatment for his gambling addiction.
