Dream vs Valkyries Prediction: WNBA Finals Game 1 Picks and Best Bet

Atlanta has not lost a playoff game, and Golden State has not lost at Chase Center in a way that matters, so something has to give when the WNBA Finals open Saturday.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Golden State Valkyries -2.5
  • Why: The league’s best defense plus a 21-5 home record beats an Atlanta offense that may be missing its leading scorer.
  • The number to watch: Allisha Gray’s availability; she averaged 19.0 points per game and is officially questionable.

The Golden State Valkyries (32-12) are the No. 2 seed and, in only their second season of existence, are already playing for a championship. They beat Dallas 2-1 in the first round and then swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals. The Atlanta Dream (30-14) arrive as the No. 4 seed with a perfect 6-0 postseason record and a 10-game winning streak, having swept Washington and then the New York Liberty.

Either way, this series crowns a first-time champion. Game 1 tips at 3:30 p.m. ET from Chase Center in San Francisco and airs on NBC and Peacock.

Valkyries Open as Short Home Favorites

The market sees this as a tight series opener. Golden State is favored by 2.5 points at home, with the moneyline sitting around Valkyries -142 and Dream +120, and the total is set at roughly 154.5. The series price is nearly a coin flip, with the Valkyries slightly ahead at about -115 to win it all.

That small spread tells you oddsmakers respect Atlanta’s road résumé, since the Dream posted the best road net rating in the WNBA this season. But it also builds in the fact that the Valkyries swept the regular-season series, and a home-court edge worth a couple of points is exactly where the market has landed. Can Atlanta’s Offense Crack the League’s Best Defense?

This is the heart of the matchup. Head coach Natalie Nakase has built Golden State into the No. 1 defense in the WNBA, and that group is a perfect 21-5 at home when you count the playoffs. That defense showed up in a 83-81 Game 2 win over Las Vegas, where Veronica Burton hit a deep three with 41 seconds left and Tiffany Hayes scored 21 points.

Burton is the engine at 12.2 points and 5.7 assists per game, while Gabby Williams (14.4 points) and Janelle Salaun (12.7) supply the scoring punch. Kiah Stokes anchors the rim at 1.7 blocks per game, which matters against an Atlanta team that wants to attack inside.

Golden State won 21 of 26 home games this season and swept Atlanta in the regular-season series.

Atlanta’s route to the Finals has been impressive, but it has also been manageable. The Dream avoided top-seeded Minnesota and beat a young Washington team and the No. 8 seed in New York. They did it with Angel Reese, who scored 22 points with nine rebounds in the Game 3 clincher, Rhyne Howard, who added 21, and Jordin Canada, who had 19 points and 11 assists.

The big question is Allisha Gray. She hurt her left hand in Game 1 of the semifinals, was limited to 11 minutes that night, and has called herself day-to-day. Brionna Jones is already out for the season. The Valkyries, meanwhile, have all 12 players available. If Gray plays at less than full strength, Atlanta loses its best perimeter scorer against the toughest defense it will see all year.

Depth matters here too. Atlanta added 39-year-old DeWanna Bonner midseason, and she gave them 13 points and a team-high 13 rebounds in the clincher against New York. That kind of veteran scoring off the bench is the reason the Dream can survive a quiet night from a starter.

There is one angle that favors the Dream. Reese grabbed 12 or more rebounds in all three regular-season games against Golden State, and the Valkyries ranked only seventh in rebound percentage. A big night on the glass keeps Atlanta in this game, but it probably does not win it by itself.

Prediction and Best Bet

Golden State wins a tight, physical opener at home. Atlanta will keep it close because of Reese and Canada, but the Valkyries’ defense and their 21-5 home mark are tough to bet against, especially if Gray is limited or out. The spread is small enough that the Valkyries only need to win by three.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Golden State Valkyries 84, Atlanta Dream 79
  2. Best Bet: Golden State Valkyries -2.5

Take the home team and the better defense, and check Gray’s status before tip because a late scratch only strengthens the case. If you are new to wagering, our responsible gambling page is worth a read first. Anyone betting on the series should also keep an eye on our live sports betting odds.
