Colts Fire GM Chris Ballard After 2-4 Start: What It Means for Indianapolis Odds and Steichen

The Indianapolis Colts have fired general manager Chris Ballard, owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon announced Monday, one day after a 26-20 home loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans dropped the team to 2-4. Ballard was six games into his tenth season running the franchise, and the move reshapes the front office, the coaching picture and the way the market views Indianapolis the rest of the way.

Ballard arrived in 2017 and leaves with a regular-season record of 72-82-1. The Colts made the playoffs twice under his watch, in 2018 and 2020, and won one postseason game, going 1-2 overall. They never won the AFC South during his tenure and have not won the division since 2014, the longest drought in the AFC South. Indianapolis has missed the playoffs in each of the last five seasons.

Irsay-Gordon Pulls the Trigger Mid-Season

In her statement, Irsay-Gordon thanked Ballard for his service but said a change in leadership was necessary to meet the organization’s standard of competing for championships. She called the in-season timing a deliberate decision, saying that waiting would only delay important work, and that the firing does not change the team’s goals for this season. The Colts did not immediately name an interim general manager and said they will conduct a thorough search for a permanent replacement.

The pressure had been building for months. Irsay-Gordon put both Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen on notice in January that 2026 had to be better, and the product on the field has not delivered. Indianapolis started 8-2 last season with Daniel Jones at quarterback before collapsing, and the team is 3-12 since. Ballard’s contract was due to expire after this season. The Colts also went all in on Jones last season, trading two first-round picks and wide receiver AD Mitchell to the New York Jets for Sauce Gardner.

Sunday’s loss made the problems plain. Jones threw two more interceptions against Tennessee, giving him six in six games, and he has thrown at least one in each of the last four contests. Steichen said afterward that Jones will not be benched. Fans at Lucas Oil Stadium booed loudly, and the boos turned into chants of "fire Ballard" by the end of the game. Indianapolis is 2-4 with 144 points scored and 164 allowed, a negative differential that backs up the record.

What the Move Means for Steichen

Steichen was not fired, and there is no obvious internal option to take over as interim head coach, which helps explain why ownership chose the general manager as the lesser-impact move. Still, the question now hangs over Steichen, who has yet to reach the playoffs as Colts head coach. A new general manager will almost certainly want a say in the coaching decision, and speculation has already begun about where Steichen might land if he becomes available after the season. One outlet has floated the Los Angeles Chargers as a potential suitor.

Colts Odds, Playoff Chances and the Betting Market

The betting market was already pessimistic on Indianapolis, and the Ballard news does little to lift the outlook. Before the firing, Kalshi had the Colts priced at roughly a 15 percent chance to make the 2026-27 playoffs, about 3 percent to win the AFC South and about 2 percent to win the AFC. Another Kalshi-based projection had the playoff number near 26 percent and the division near 12 percent earlier in the week, before Sunday’s loss to Tennessee. The Athletic’s playoff simulator, with 11 games left, put Indianapolis at a 16 percent chance to reach the postseason and a 10 percent chance to win the division.

Those numbers are a long way from where the Colts started the year. Preseason AFC South odds listed Indianapolis at roughly +380 to +425 to win the division, behind Houston and Jacksonville, as a wager on Jones staying healthy for 17 games. In the most recent futures listing found, the Colts were +650 to win the division and +10000 to win Super Bowl LXI, and that price came before Sunday’s loss. Indianapolis was a 6.5-point home favorite against the Titans and lost outright, a result that will weigh on how bettors treat the Colts in the weeks ahead.

The schedule offers little help. Early lines for Week 7 had the Vikings favored by 5.5 points over the Colts, and Jacksonville, now 4-2 and atop the AFC South, is the clear division favorite in the prediction markets. Houston sits at 2-4 as well, level with Indianapolis, while Tennessee is 1-5 after its win.

Beyond the weekly lines, the firing opens new futures conversations. Markets on the next Colts general manager, on Steichen’s job status and on the next round of head coaching vacancies are likely to draw interest as the season goes on, though bettors should check current lines for any such offerings, since none were confirmed at the time of writing. The most important variable remains the quarterback. If Jones keeps turning the ball over, the team’s win-total outlook and Steichen’s job security will keep moving together, and whoever Irsay-Gordon hires will inherit a roster with limited draft capital and a lot of questions.
