College Football Week 0 Preview: UNC-TCU in Dublin, USC Opener, and Memphis-UNLV Headline Saturday

College football is technically back this Saturday, even if it doesn’t feel like the “real” season kicking off just yet. August 29 marks Week 0, a small appetizer slate of eight games before the sport goes full-throttle across the rest of Labor Day weekend. But don’t let the “Week 0” label fool you — this particular Saturday is stacked with genuine storylines, from a game being played on another continent to a marquee Group of Five showdown under the lights in Las Vegas. Here’s what casual fans need to know heading into the first real football Saturday of the year.

Bill Belichick Gets a Do-Over, 3,000 Miles From Home

The single most unusual game of the day sends North Carolina and TCU across the Atlantic to Dublin, Ireland, where they’ll kick off the season at Aviva Stadium as part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. It’s noon ET, it’s on ESPN, and it’s a rematch of a game UNC would probably like to forget — TCU throttled the Tar Heels 48-14 in Bill Belichick’s college coaching debut last September.

A year later, Belichick is entering Year 2 in Chapel Hill with a full offseason under his belt, a roster that’s had time to buy into his program, and a new starting quarterback in Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. Belichick has been careful not to oversell his optimism publicly, but he’s made clear the vibe around the building is different — more continuity, better health, less of the “meeting each other for the first time” feeling that plagued Year 1. TCU, under Sonny Dykes, is favored by a touchdown and a half in the rematch, but for UNC fans, just competing with the same team that embarrassed them last year would be a meaningful signal. Beating them would be a statement heard well beyond Ireland.

USC Opens at Home With Its Heisman-Caliber Quarterback

Back stateside, Lincoln Riley kicks off his fifth season at USC hosting San Jose State at the Coliseum, and while the final score isn’t likely to be much of a mystery, the game matters for what it reveals about the Trojans’ ceiling. Quarterback Jayden Maiava is back after a breakout 2025 campaign — 3,711 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and a QBR that ranked second-best in the entire country. Riley has been effusive about Maiava heading into this season, saying he hasn’t coached anyone who’s improved as much from day one to now.

USC went 9-4 last season with a talented but still-developing roster, and with more than a dozen key contributors back — plus the nation’s top-ranked freshman class mixed in — expectations in LA are the highest they’ve been since Riley arrived. San Jose State is an overmatched opponent, but this game is really about USC using it as a tune-up before a brutal Big Ten slate that includes Oregon, Washington, and Ohio State later in the year.

NC State and Virginia Kick Off With Two Proven Quarterbacks

If you want an actual competitive Week 0 game, this is the one. NC State travels to Charlottesville to face Virginia, and both teams enter with clear answers at quarterback — a rarity this early in the season. NC State’s C.J. Bailey is back for his third year as the starter after throwing for 3,105 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, and he’s one of the more underrated dual-threat quarterbacks in the ACC. Virginia countered by naming Missouri transfer Beau Pribula its starter over Pitt transfer Eli Holstein, giving the Cavaliers a quarterback with experience in both the Big Ten and SEC before he ever suits up in Charlottesville.

Current college football odds have Virginia favored by around 5.5 points in what most expect to be a close, high-scoring afternoon — some analysts are pegging it as basically a coin flip once you account for how many new pieces NC State has to fit together early in the year. Whoever wins this one gets a nice early confidence boost in a conference that’s suddenly a lot more competitive than it’s been in years past.

Memphis and UNLV Headline Week 0 Under the Lights

Saturday closes with arguably the most nationally intriguing game of the day: Memphis and UNLV meeting for the very first time in program history, live from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on FOX at 10 p.m. ET. Both programs are considered legitimate Group of Five College Football Playoff contenders this season, which means this isn’t just a fun late-night curiosity — it’s a game that could carry real weight when playoff resumes get sorted out in December.

Memphis opens a new era under first-year head coach Charles Huff, who’s still sorting out his quarterback room between Marcus Stokes and Air Noland heading into kickoff. UNLV, meanwhile, returns to Allegiant under second-year coach Dan Mullen after a 10-4 season that ended with a Mountain West title-game appearance. The Rebels lean heavily on running back Jai’Den Thomas, who was a dual threat as both a runner and receiver last year, and containing him will be job one for a Memphis defense trying to make a good first impression under its new staff. UNLV is favored by about a touchdown, but Memphis opening on the road against one of the Mountain West’s best teams says a lot about how confident the Tigers are in Huff’s rebuild.

This Week’s Best Bets

Four very different games, four very different vibes — but each one tells you something real about where these programs stand heading into 2026. Here’s how to watch the slate if you’re picking a few storylines to follow all day.

  • UNC vs. TCU (Dublin): Watch for whether Belichick’s Year 2 improvements actually show up on the field against the same team that blew them out last year.
  • USC vs. San Jose State: Less about the outcome, more about how sharp Jayden Maiava looks in his final tune-up before Big Ten play begins.
  • NC State at Virginia: The closest game on the board — a legitimate toss-up between two quarterbacks who’ve already proven they can play at a high level.
  • Memphis at UNLV: The night’s marquee showcase, with real College Football Playoff stakes for both Group of Five contenders.

Enjoy the appetizer — the main course of the 2026 college football season arrives in full force just a few days later.
