The Cubs have already taken two of the first three meetings at Kauffman Stadium this weekend, and Sunday’s rubber match pits a red-hot NL Wild Card leader against a Royals club that just can’t find its footing at home.
Quick take:
- Pick: Chicago Cubs -158 on the moneyline
- Why: Matthew Boyd has been one of baseball’s steadiest arms all season, and the Cubs’ lineup has feasted on Kansas City pitching all series long
- The number to watch: Boyd’s 3.59 ERA and 7-1 record against a Royals offense hitting just .234 over its last 10 games
Chicago comes in at 68-50 and holding the top NL Wild Card spot, 4.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central but riding the kind of form that makes a division chase feel secondary. Kansas City, meanwhile, sits at 49-69, 12 games back in the AL Central, and Sunday’s series finale is as much about pride as anything else at this point in the summer.
This is win-one, lose-one so far in Kansas City. The Cubs took the opener 6-4 behind a strong Kevin Gausman outing, but the Royals answered right back Saturday, riding Seth Lugo’s six scoreless-adjacent innings to a 6-3 win that snapped a two-game skid. That sets up Sunday afternoon as a legitimate series decider, with lefty Matthew Boyd taking the ball for Chicago against Kansas City’s Randy Dobnak.
Books have the Cubs sitting around -158 on the moneyline with a runline near -1.5 (+100), and the total sitting at 10, per the live MLB odds tracker. That’s a notably shorter number than you’d expect for a team that just dropped a game to a sub-.500 club, and it speaks to how differently oddsmakers view the two probable starters. Boyd has quietly been one of the best value arms in baseball this year — a 7-1 record and 3.59 ERA that undersell just how tough he’s been to hit lately. Dobnak has been solid in his own right for Kansas City (2-0, 1.16 ERA in a small sample), but the Royals’ lineup around him has been the issue, not the pitching.
| Monday, August 10 at 10:10 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Kansas City Royals | +2.5 (-140) | +260 | O 7.5 (-110) |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | -2.5 (115) | -300 | U 7.5 (-110) |
Chicago’s won five straight and eight of its last 10, while Kansas City has dropped three of its last four series openers before Saturday’s response — the underlying form gap is stark even with a split series so far.

Kansas City is still waiting on its middle of the order. Vinnie Pasquantino remains on the 10-day IL with right wrist soreness stemming from his earlier hamate surgery, and while he could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this week, he won’t be in this lineup Sunday. Maikel Garcia is also out with a hand injury. Bobby Witt Jr. is back after missing 11 games with back tightness, and he’s made an immediate impact — a 3-for-5 day with two runs scored in his return — but he can’t carry a lineup missing two other everyday bats by himself.
Pete Crow-Armstrong has been the engine for Chicago’s offense in this series, hitting well over .280 for the season with 26 home runs and 70 RBI, and he’s been getting on base at a .388 clip even when the power numbers cool off. Seiya Suzuki has quietly put together a strong campaign in the two-hole as well, and with Kyle Tucker anchoring the middle of the order, the Cubs simply have more places for runs to come from than Kansas City does right now.
The Royals are hitting just .234 with a .385 slugging percentage as a team over their last 10 games — a lineup that can’t punish mistakes is a lineup that loses series finales.
That number matters more against Boyd than against most starters, because Boyd doesn’t hand out free passes. He’s not a strikeout monster, but he limits walks and keeps the ball on the ground enough that a punchless lineup like Kansas City’s current group is exactly the matchup that plays into his hands. Dobnak has to be sharp for nine innings, essentially, because his own offense isn’t going to bail him out with a big inning.
Chicago’s won five in a row for a reason, and Sunday’s matchup on paper — a proven veteran lefty against a lineup still missing two key bats — favors the Cubs pulling away in this series finale rather than Kansas City stealing the rubber match.
The pick:
Boyd’s command against a shorthanded Royals lineup is too clean an edge to pass up, and Chicago closes out this series the same way it opened it. Run this line through a betting calculator before locking it in.
