The Braves have owned the NL East all summer, but the Yankees just won two straight off them at Yankee Stadium — and now Atlanta needs Grant Holmes to stop the bleeding before this series turns into a real problem.
Quick take:
- Pick: Yankees -1.5 (run line)
- Why: Cam Schlittler has been the best pitcher on either roster in this series and the Braves have lost two straight to a lineup that’s been without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger all week
- The number to watch: Schlittler’s 0.95 WHIP
Atlanta rolls in at 70-47 and still sits atop the NL East, but the margin over the field has been shrinking after back-to-back one-run losses to open this series. New York is 66-51, four and a half games back of Boston in the AL East, clinging to a wild-card cushion with a lineup missing four significant names to injury. And yet the Yankees have won the first two games of this series anyway — 5-4 and 3-2 — which tells you something about how well this rotation has pitched even shorthanded.
This is Game 3 of a four-game set, and the season series between these two is dead even at 5-5. Something breaks Sunday.
Why the Market Still Trusts New York at Home
Books have the Yankees favored at -140 to -150 on the moneyline with Atlanta getting +125 to +130, and the run line has New York at -1.5 (+130 to +146) against Atlanta’s +1.5 (-161 to -165). The total sits at 8.5. That’s a notably confident number for a team that’s been without its best hitter since June, and it’s mostly a reflection of the pitching matchup — Schlittler has been legitimately dominant, and the market is pricing this as a pitcher’s duel that tilts toward the healthier arm. Recent Form
Atlanta’s been red-hot for weeks but has stumbled at the worst time, dropping the first two of this series. New York’s turned a mediocre stretch into consecutive wins right when it mattered most.

Holmes vs. Schlittler Is Not a Fair Fight Right Now
Grant Holmes takes the ball for Atlanta at 7-4 with a 3.67 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts against 46 walks over 108 innings — solid, mid-rotation numbers for a Braves staff that’s carried a 3.61 team ERA and a plus-120 run differential all year. Cam Schlittler is playing a different sport. He’s 10-6 with a 2.26 ERA and a microscopic 0.95 WHIP, and his Stuff+ grade (113) is elite by any measure. He’s been one of the more underrated arms in the American League all season, and Atlanta’s lineup has already seen what that looks like up close over the last two nights.
The bigger issue for Atlanta is that its offense has cooled at exactly the wrong time. Matt Olson (.269, 33 homers) and Michael Harris II (.292, 20 homers) are still doing damage, but Ronald Acuña Jr. has been quieter of late and Austin Riley is scuffling at .222. New York, meanwhile, keeps finding just enough offense from Ben Rice (.260, 31 homers) and a resurgent Jazz Chisholm Jr. (17 homers) to make shorthanded lineups work.
New York’s pitching staff has racked up 1,041 strikeouts as a team — second-most in baseball — despite missing Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil to injury all season.
That strikeout depth is the real story here. The Yankees have absorbed the loss of Judge, Stanton, Bellinger, and multiple rotation arms and are still getting outs at an elite clip. Schlittler getting the ball Sunday, against a Braves lineup that’s been shut down in low-scoring games each of the last two nights, is not a great matchup for Atlanta’s bats to suddenly wake up in.
Atlanta’s saving grace is that this Braves team has been the best in the NL East for a reason — a plus-120 run differential doesn’t happen by accident, and hitters like Olson and Harris are capable of erasing a deficit in one swing. But betting on that against Schlittler’s current form is a bet against the hottest arm in this series.
Prediction and Best Bet
The Yankees have won this matchup with pitching two nights running, and there’s no reason to expect a third straight game to flip that script. Schlittler’s command edge over Holmes is significant enough to lean New York not just on the moneyline, but to cover the run line.
The pick:
- Prediction: New York Yankees 5, Atlanta Braves 2
- Best Bet: Yankees -1.5 on the run line
Back the arm that’s actually been unhittable this weekend — Schlittler gives New York the safer margin, not just the win.
