Cleveland is one win from a 3-1 stranglehold on the ALCS, but Tampa Bay has one thing the Guardians couldn’t solve all year: Nick Martinez.
Quick take:
- Pick: Tampa Bay Rays moneyline
- Why: Martinez shut Cleveland down twice this season, and the Rays’ bats are due to rebound after a 13-strikeout Game 3.
- The number to watch: Cleveland hit just .159 against Martinez in the regular season.
The Guardians lead the American League Championship Series 2-1 after Thursday’s 3-2 win at Progressive Field, a game that turned on an unlikely swing. Rookie center fielder Petey Halpin, a defense-first player who only moved into the lineup for the ALDS clincher against the White Sox, launched a two-run homer off Griffin Jax in the fifth inning and followed it with a bat flip that will be replayed all winter.
Tampa Bay isn’t panicking. The Rays won 98 games, took the AL East and swept the Yankees in the Division Series. They also won the 2026 regular-season series from Cleveland 5-1.
Game 4 is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on TBS, truTV and HBO Max, but check the weather before you do anything else. Rain is forecast for much of Friday in Cleveland, and MLB already moved Game 3 up five hours once to dodge it. If the game slides a day, the pitching plans change, so confirm the starters before you bet.
A Coin-Flip Line With a Pitching Mystery Underneath
The market sees this one as a pick’em. The Rays opened at -112 and the Guardians at -108, and by Thursday night the moneyline sat around -110 on both sides at DraftKings, with the total at 6.5 runs after opening at 7.5. That drop tells you what bettors expect: a low-scoring, bullpen-heavy game.
The wrinkle is that neither manager has named a starter. Martinez is the expected Rays starter if the game is played Friday, while Cleveland’s plan is unsettled, with Foster Griffin, Joey Cantillo and Slade Cecconi among the candidates. When one side has a known quantity and the other is guessing, that is where value tends to hide. Compare the numbers against the live MLB odds before you lock in a price.

Why the Rays Bounce Back Friday
Through three games, Cleveland is hitting .257 as a team while Tampa Bay sits at .185, and the Rays struck out 13 times on just three hits in Game 3. That is a rough stretch, but they still lost by only one run. Chandler Simpson’s fourth-inning triple showed the speed element is intact, and Jonny DeLuca leads the club with four hits in the series.
Martinez beat Cleveland twice in the regular season, allowing seven hits and one walk over 13 scoreless innings while the Guardians slashed .159/.178/.182 against him.
That is the load-bearing stat. Martinez went 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA over 31 starts this season, and he has spent the first three games of this series sitting in the bullpen or dugout with his cleats on, waiting for his turn.
The counterpoint is real. Jose Ramirez is 6-for-12 in the series, Cleveland has outhit Tampa Bay 26-17, and Halpin is batting .364 with an .818 slugging percentage since entering the lineup. The Guardians also have a home crowd chanting a rookie’s name. If rain delays or a quick hook limit Martinez to a short outing, the game falls to the bullpens, and Cleveland’s Cade Smith closed out Game 3.
Still, this is a 98-win team against an 85-win team at an even price, and the Rays have the clearest pitching edge on the board. That makes Tampa Bay at -110 the better side of the number.
The bullpen picture matters just as much as the starters. Cleveland is leaning on a patchwork approach for the next two games, with Parker Messick and postseason strikeout leader Gavin Williams lined up on normal rest for a potential Game 6 and Game 7 in Tampa. That means Friday and Saturday are likely to feature one bullpen game and one traditional starter, and Tanner Bibee’s rough outing in the Division Series has hurt his standing. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has Drew Rasmussen, Freddy Peralta and Griffin Jax all through their first turn, so its rotation is far more settled heading into this stretch.
Weather adds one more variable. If Game 4 is pushed back a day, Rasmussen could return on normal rest, which would arguably make the Rays even stronger. If it is played Friday night in cold, wet conditions, expect pitchers to have the advantage and the over to be a risky play at 6.5.
Prediction and Best Bet
Expect a tight, low-scoring game with both bullpens in play. Martinez’s track record against this lineup tips it toward Tampa Bay, and the Rays’ offense is overdue for a few more hits after a 13-strikeout Game 3. If the game is delayed or postponed, recheck the pick against the confirmed starters.
The pick:
- Prediction: Rays 4, Guardians 3
- Best Bet: Tampa Bay Rays on the moneyline
A coin-flip price on the team with the proven edge against this lineup is the right side, provided Martinez is confirmed as the starter. Bet within your means, and see our responsible gambling page if you need support.
