Braves vs. Mets Prediction: Atlanta Looks to Bury NL East Rival at Citi Field

The Braves have won this season series with the Mets before, and now they get a chance to bury the rivalry outright as the division-leading club rolls into Citi Field to face the team they’ve already beaten into last place.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Atlanta Braves moneyline
  • Why: Martín Pérez has dominated at Citi Field for years, and the Mets are missing a suddenly banged-up Francisco Lindor while starting a rookie left-hander with all of five career starts
  • The number to watch: Pérez is a perfect 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA in eight career outings at Citi Field

Atlanta arrives at 61-43 and sitting comfortably atop the NL East, while New York is mired at 43-62 and looking up at basically the entire division. This is the fourth meeting between these two in the last two weeks alone, and the results have gone in every direction — the Braves took two of the first three before the Mets rallied for a walk-off win in the finale. Monday night’s series opener is the first of three straight at Citi Field, and Atlanta would love nothing more than to open with a statement.

What the Market Is Saying About This One

Books have the Braves as modest road favorites, with Atlanta sitting around -111 to -112 on the moneyline and the Mets getting plus money in the +101 to +102 range. The total has settled around 8 to 8.5 runs, and the over has actually cashed in the last three meetings between these two clubs at that same number. On the run line, Atlanta laying a run and a half comes back around +150, while New York taking the extra run and a half sits closer to -170 — a sign the market expects this to be closer than the moneyline alone suggests, even with the Braves favored to simply win the game outright. Recent Form

The gap in the standings tells most of the story, but the day-to-day form has actually been tighter than a 15-game separation suggests.

Pérez’s Citi Field Magic Meets a Reeling Mets Offense

Martín Pérez takes the ball for Atlanta at 6-6 with a 3.38 ERA, and while his last month has been shakier than his season line suggests — he’s lost three of his last four starts and only worked past five innings once in that stretch — none of that history has mattered at Citi Field specifically. He’s 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA in eight career outings there, a track record that’s held up regardless of what kind of form he’s carrying into any individual start.

The Mets counter with rookie left-hander Zac Thornton, who has been one of the better stories in their otherwise lost season. Thornton is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA and a tiny 0.86 WHIP in his first five big-league starts, and he’s been especially sharp lately — just one earned run allowed across his last 19 innings, good for a 0.47 ERA in that stretch. He’s a legitimate weapon if his stuff holds, but he’s also a five-start rookie about to face a lineup that’s outscored opponents by 95 runs this season.

Atlanta has outscored opponents by +95 runs this season, the best run differential in the NL East, while the Mets sit at -60 — the widest gap of any matchup on the Braves’ remaining schedule.

Ozzie Albies has been the engine of that offense lately, hitting .266 with 15 homers and an .755 OPS, and Ronald Acuña Jr. has been getting back on track with a .794 OPS and 15 stolen bases in just 53 games back. On the other side, Francisco Lindor enters this series questionable with a hand issue after cooling off significantly — he’s hitting just .167 over his last seven games — and losing their best player to injury concerns is the last thing a last-place team needs against a Braves lineup this deep.

New York’s pitching staff isn’t helping matters either. Both Tylor Megill and Justin Hagenman are out, leaving a rotation already relying on unproven arms even thinner. Atlanta has its own rotation issues, with Spencer Schwellenbach and AJ Smith-Shawver both out, but the Braves’ lineup depth has been able to absorb pitching losses in a way the last-place Mets simply haven’t matched all season.

Prediction and Best Bet

Thornton’s recent form is real, and a rookie riding a scoreless streak can silence any lineup for one night — that’s the appeal of the Mets getting plus money here. But Pérez’s history at this specific ballpark, combined with a Mets offense playing shorthanded without its best hitter, points toward Atlanta doing what a first-place team is supposed to do against a last-place opponent.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Atlanta Braves 5, New York Mets 3
  2. Best Bet: Atlanta Braves on the moneyline

Lay the reasonable price on the better team, especially with the opposing lineup’s best player banged up and questionable to even play.
