Milwaukee has already taken this series, and now the NL’s best team gets a chance to complete the sweep against a Braves club that looks completely out of gas.
Quick take:
- Pick: Milwaukee Brewers moneyline
- Why: Milwaukee has outscored Atlanta 6-2 through two games this series and gets the platoon-friendly Shane Drohan on the mound against a Braves lineup that’s been ice cold on the road
- The number to watch: Milwaukee’s +163 run differential, tops in the National League
The Brewers roll into Sunday at 81-49, sitting comfortably atop the NL Central and riding a three-game winning streak that includes a 22-0 demolition of Seattle just last week. Atlanta, meanwhile, has dropped five of its last seven and has already lost the first two games of this series at American Family Field, 2-1 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday. The Braves are still holding onto the NL East lead, but a stumble like this in late August against the sport’s hottest team is exactly the kind of stretch that turns a comfortable division race into a nervous one.
Sportsbooks have Milwaukee as a solid favorite for the finale, with the Brewers priced in the -134 to -160 range on the moneyline depending on the book, and Atlanta getting anywhere from +116 to +132. The total sits at 8.5 runs. That line reflects two things: Milwaukee’s offense hasn’t slowed down all season, and Atlanta’s bullpen has been stretched thin by a wave of pitching injuries that’s left manager Brian Snitker patching things together on the fly.
| Sunday, August 23 at 7:11 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Atlanta Braves | +1.5 (-194) | +118 | O 7.5 (-102) |
| Milwaukee Brewers | -1.5 (152) | -125 | U 7.5 (-120) |
The gap between these two clubs shows up clearly when you look at how each team has played over its last stretch of games, and the head-to-head results from this very series only reinforce it.

Atlanta’s pitching depth has been gutted. Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, and Robert Suarez are all on the 60-day IL with elbow issues, and closer-caliber reliever Joe Jimenez remains out following knee surgery. Reynaldo Lopez, who had been filling a rotation spot, only just began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett after missing all of August with knee inflammation. That leaves Sunday’s ball in the hands of Tyler Mahle, who’s been shaky all year at 4-10 with a 4.53 ERA. Mahle has given hitters more traffic on the bases than a team facing Milwaukee’s lineup can afford.
On the other side, Shane Drohan has quietly turned into a reliable arm for Milwaukee, sitting at 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA and 99 strikeouts. He won’t overpower anyone, but the Brewers haven’t needed him to — this offense has scored 648 runs on the season, tied for the best mark in baseball, and it’s done plenty of the heavy lifting all series.
Milwaukee’s +163 run differential is the best in the National League, more than 50 runs clear of Atlanta’s +108 mark.
Atlanta isn’t without weapons. Michael Harris II has quietly put together a strong season at .293 with 20 home runs and 70 RBI, and Ozzie Albies has matched him with 20 homers of his own. Matt Olson remains the anchor of the lineup at .260 with 36 long balls. But that trio has to be nearly perfect on Sunday, because behind them the lineup thins out fast, and Atlanta has managed just two runs total across the first two games of this series.
Milwaukee’s depth is the real separator here. It’s not just Christian Yelich and William Contreras carrying the load — the Brewers have gotten contributions up and down the order all series, and that balance is part of why they’ve won three straight and eight of their last ten. A team playing with this much margin for error at home doesn’t often let a series slip away in the finale.
Atlanta’s road struggles compound the problem. The Braves are a noticeably different team away from Truist Park this season, and a beat-up pitching staff traveling into a hostile, first-place environment is a tough combination to overcome. Milwaukee’s bullpen has also been steadier down the stretch, giving manager Pat Murphy more flexibility to play matchups late if Sunday’s game is tight into the sixth or seventh inning. That kind of late-game trust is exactly what separates a division leader from a team fighting to stay ahead in its own race.
Atlanta’s shorthanded bullpen and a rotation piece in Mahle who’s struggled with consistency all year make this a tough spot to back the Braves, especially with Milwaukee this locked in at home. Expect the Brewers’ offense to again create enough pressure to pull away in the middle innings.
The pick:
With the Braves’ pitching staff running on fumes and Milwaukee playing its best baseball of the summer, the Brewers are the safer side to build around Sunday — a straight moneyline play makes more sense than chasing a bigger number on the run line.
