The Blue Jays have already stolen two straight from Philadelphia this weekend, and now they get a crack at a series sweep with Jesús Luzardo on the mound trying to stop the bleeding.
Quick take:
- Pick: Phillies -1.5
- Why: Luzardo against a shaky Shane Bieber gives Philadelphia the pitching edge needed to snap a two-game skid at home
- The number to watch: Bieber’s 5.11 ERA and 89 Stuff+ against a Phillies lineup already up 2-2 in the season series
Toronto took both games of this series so far, winning 5-4 on Friday and grinding out a 7-5 win in 11 innings on Saturday, and that’s flipped the Blue Jays’ whole trip through Philadelphia into something worth watching. The Blue Jays sit at 56-62, fifth in the AL East and 15 games back, while the Phillies are 62-56 and clinging to second in the NL East at 8.5 back of the division leader. Neither club is exactly rolling — Toronto’s actually won 6 of its last 10 despite the ugly record, and Philadelphia has dropped two straight after Saturday’s walk-off-flavored loss extended a stretch that’s seen the Phillies go just 5-5 over their last 10.
This is the series finale, and the Phillies badly need to avoid the sweep in front of their own fans at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is set for 1:35 PM ET, and both clubs are treating this one with more urgency than a typical August getaway-day game between two teams outside the playoff picture at the moment.
Why Philadelphia Is Still Favored After Two Losses
Sportsbooks haven’t lost faith in the Phillies despite the two straight defeats — Philadelphia opened as roughly a -200 favorite on the MLB odds board, with a run line of -1.5 and a total around 8. That price is almost entirely about who’s pitching: Jesús Luzardo (10-5, 3.36 ERA) draws Shane Bieber (3-2, 5.11 ERA), and the gap between those two arms is the widest of any start in this series. Luzardo’s xFIP sits near 3.02 with a 21.4% K-BB rate, while Bieber’s Stuff+ grades out at just 89 with an xERA closer to 7.44 in recent Statcast reads — a number that suggests his surface ERA might even be underselling how hittable he’s been.

Recent Form
The underlying form paints two teams trending in opposite directions than their weekend results suggest — Toronto’s actually been the hotter club overall, while Philadelphia’s late-season offense has cooled at exactly the wrong time.

The Injury Report Tilts Things Further
Philadelphia’s already thin outfield picture got worse this weekend. Aaron Nola was pulled from Saturday’s game with a right knee contusion, adding to a Phillies injury list that includes Adolis García (out for the season after right lat surgery), Johan Rojas (out until 2027 following UCL repair), and Derek Hill day-to-day with a shoulder issue. Andrew Painter is trending back after hamstring tightness, but the bullpen and outfield depth have both been stretched thin for weeks now.
Toronto, for its part, has actually been getting timely offense from the middle of its order. Alejandro Kirk has been a steady presence behind the plate, and the Blue Jays bullpen bailed them out in extras on Saturday — a sign this roster has more fight in it than a 56-62 record implies. Toronto also made a notable move at the trade deadline, adding right-hander Jose Soriano from the Angels, and he’s already made his Blue Jays debut in this very series on Friday.
Bieber’s Stuff+ of 89 is nearly 20 points below Luzardo’s 111, the widest pitching quality gap in any game of this series.
That stuff differential matters more than the moneyline number suggests. Luzardo’s ability to miss bats — he’s punching out over a fifth of hitters he faces beyond his walks — should let Philadelphia control at-bats in a way Toronto’s lineup hasn’t seen from Bieber’s counterparts this weekend. The Phillies also get the platoon benefit of a lefty starter against a Blue Jays order that’s leaned more on right-handed pop lately.
Still, Toronto’s won this season series 2-2 with two of those wins coming in just the last three days, and this Blue Jays club clearly isn’t intimidated by Citizens Bank Park. If Bieber can give Toronto five capable innings, that bullpen has shown it can hold a lead. The bigger question is whether Toronto’s lineup can keep producing against Luzardo the way it has against lesser arms this weekend, since Luzardo has been Philadelphia’s most consistent starter all season.
Prediction and Best Bet
Philadelphia’s pitching advantage is real, and a home team fighting off a sweep with its best remaining arm on the mound is enough to lean Phillies here, even against a Toronto club that’s won the last two.
The pick:
- Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies 6, Toronto Blue Jays 3
- Best Bet: Phillies -1.5
Luzardo’s stuff against a soft Bieber outing is the deciding factor, and Philadelphia should have enough to avoid the sweep.
