Atlanta Dream vs. Los Angeles Sparks Prediction: Dream Look to Roll Again

The Atlanta Dream just blew the doors off the Los Angeles Sparks by 36 points four days ago, and Monday night at Crypto.com Arena, nothing about either team’s trajectory suggests a different outcome is coming.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Atlanta Dream -9.5
  • Why: Atlanta is the No. 1 seed in the East riding a three-game win streak, while LA has lost 21 of its last 24 games
  • The number to watch: Atlanta’s plus-13.3 scoring margin over its last five games

Atlanta (24-13) has climbed to first place in the Eastern Conference, passing Indiana with a three-game winning streak that includes wins over Las Vegas, Phoenix, and that 124-88 demolition of the Sparks on August 20. Los Angeles (13-24) sits sixth in the West, clinging to relevance with a win over Connecticut on Saturday that snapped a four-game skid. This is a rematch just four days removed from one of the most lopsided scorelines of the WNBA season.

A Line That Barely Moved Since the Last Beatdown

Sportsbooks have Atlanta favored by 9.5 to 10 points depending on the sportsbook you check, with moneyline prices ranging from -450 to -500 on the Dream and Los Angeles sitting around +350. The total opened near 182.5 and has held steady, with a slight lean toward the under given how defense-optional the first meeting actually wasn’t on Atlanta’s end — the Dream shot 63.9% from the field in that 124-88 win. The market clearly isn’t buying a big correction from LA at home, and given Atlanta’s still without Brionna Jones and still handling business regardless, that skepticism looks earned.

Gray and Reese Lead a Deep Attack Against a Shorthanded Sparks Roster

Allisha Gray has been Atlanta’s most consistent scorer all season, averaging 19.4 points per game on 46.1% shooting, and she torched the Sparks for 13 points in limited run during the first meeting. Angel Reese has been even more dominant of late — over her last five games she’s putting up 17.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists a night, and she went for 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in the win over LA on August 20. Rhyne Howard adds another shot-creator to the mix, and she erupted for 26 points on 5-of-8 from three in that same game. Brionna Jones remains out for Atlanta with a leg injury and no clear timetable, but the depth hasn’t missed a beat — Naz Hillmon chipped in a near double-double off the bench in the last meeting.

Los Angeles leans on Nneka Ogwumike, who’s averaging 16.6 points and 8.7 rebounds on a sharp 50.4% clip, but she’s had to do more work with fewer possessions than she’d like against Atlanta’s defense, which ranks first in the league in steals per game. Dearica Hamby (14.9 PPG) and Rae Burrell (14.2 PPG) give the Sparks scoring punch, and Burrell in particular has been trending up — she dropped 20 points with three steals and three blocks in Saturday’s win over Connecticut. But this roster has struggled to find consistency all year, sitting 14th in the league in points allowed per game.

Atlanta is shooting 46.5% from the field over its last five games while forcing 9.2 steals per contest, the best mark in the WNBA.

That defensive pressure is the separator. Los Angeles has coughed the ball up on 14.7 turnovers per game this season, and Atlanta’s ball-hawking guards — led by Jordin Canada’s 7.4 assists and 2.6 turnovers per game — are built to exploit exactly that kind of sloppiness. It’s a bad matchup for a Sparks team that’s lost five of its last six meetings with the Dream dating back to last season.

The counterpoint for LA: this is a get-right spot at home, and Ogwumike has quietly been one of the most efficient bigs in the league all year. If the Sparks can control tempo and keep this closer to a half-court grind, the number could tighten. But Atlanta has been the better team every night it’s mattered lately, and revenge blowouts like this rarely swing that hard back the other way inside a week.

Prediction and Best Bet

Atlanta’s defensive pressure, depth, and sheer talent gap should be enough to cover again, even on the road against a Sparks team fighting for its playoff life in the West. Los Angeles will make it competitive for stretches, but the turnovers and depth issues that have plagued them all season are unlikely to disappear against this particular opponent.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Atlanta Dream 92, Los Angeles Sparks 79
  2. Best Bet: Atlanta Dream -9.5

Atlanta has simply been the more complete team in both meetings this season, and until Los Angeles proves it can slow down that defense, betting against the Dream in this matchup is a tough sell.
