Alabama Set to Name Keelon Russell Starting QB, and Bettors Should Take Notice

Alabama’s summer-long quarterback competition appears to be heading toward a resolution. On3’s Chris Low reported Thursday that head coach Kalen DeBoer is expected to name sophomore Keelon Russell the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback by early next week, handing him the job over veteran Austin Mack roughly two weeks before Alabama opens its season against East Carolina on Sept. 5.

Low, who covers the SEC for On3, wrote that Russell “has been excellent this preseason” and “gives Alabama more playmaking ability at the quarterback position,” adding that the sophomore “throws a really nice ball.” Additional reporting from On3’s Pete Nakos backed up the same expectation, with multiple outlets now describing the battle between Russell and Mack as effectively decided heading into the final stretch of fall camp.

How Russell Won the Job

Russell arrived at Alabama as one of the most decorated quarterback recruits in program history. The former Duncanville, Texas, standout finished as the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2025 class, a unanimous five-star and Gatorade National Player of the Year after throwing for 4,177 yards and 55 touchdowns against just five interceptions as a senior. He was also the Elite 11 Finals MVP during his recruitment.

As a true freshman in 2025, Russell appeared in just two games, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. His most notable outing came against ULM, where he went 4 of 6 for 65 yards and two scores, earning offensive player of the week honors from the Alabama coaching staff for a separate performance against Eastern Illinois. It was a limited sample, but it showed the arm talent and efficiency that made him a five-star recruit in the first place.

Mack, meanwhile, has taken the long road. The 6-foot-6 transfer followed DeBoer from Washington to Alabama in 2024 after redshirting behind Michael Penix Jr. with the Huskies. He spent 2024 backing up Jalen Milroe and 2025 behind Ty Simpson, appearing in four games last season and completing 24 of 32 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score. Mack entered fall camp widely viewed as Alabama’s most veteran option, but Russell’s preseason performance has apparently tipped the scales.

What It Means for Alabama’s Betting Markets

The timing of this report matters for oddsmakers and bettors alike. Alabama’s national title odds have already softened considerably from the DeBoer-era highs, sitting in roughly the +2500 range at DraftKings and generally between +1500 and +2500 across most major sportsbooks — well behind the clear top tier of Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia, Oregon and Texas Tech. Prediction markets have been even more skeptical: Kalshi currently prices Alabama’s outright national championship odds at just a 4% implied probability, with Polymarket even lower at 2%, and both cite an unsettled quarterback situation as a key reason for the caution.

A resolved, confident quarterback competition is exactly the kind of development that can start to move those numbers. Markets have effectively been pricing in uncertainty at the sport’s most important position, and clarity — especially clarity built around Alabama’s highest-rated quarterback recruit in years playing with rhythm and command in fall camp — tends to be viewed as an upgrade rather than a downgrade by bettors tracking futures value. Alabama’s regular-season win total of 8.5 and its roughly +155 odds to make the College Football Playoff will be worth monitoring in the days after any official announcement, since a settled starter under center removes one of the largest lingering questions about this year’s roster.

For now, the report remains unofficial. DeBoer has not confirmed a starter, and Alabama is expected to make its decision in the days ahead of the Sept. 5 opener against East Carolina. But if Low’s reporting holds, the Crimson Tide will enter the season with a five-star sophomore who has more than lived up to his recruiting pedigree in limited action, and a betting market that will be watching closely to see whether that translates into rising confidence in Tuscaloosa.
