The Astros are supposed to be the ones with something to prove in October, but it’s the last-place Giants standing in their way of shaking off a two-game skid at Oracle Park.
Quick take:
- Pick: Houston Astros moneyline
- Why: Yordan Alvarez and a deeper lineup should be too much for a Giants offense that’s lost its best hitter to a trade
- The number to watch: Alvarez is slashing .322/.442/.640 with 35 home runs and 86 RBIs
Houston sits 60-59 and clinging to first place in the AL West, but the margins are thin — the Astros are just a half-game up on Texas and have dropped their last two, including a series loss to the Padres over the weekend. San Francisco, meanwhile, is spiraling. The Giants fell to 49-69 after getting swept in a three-game set by Detroit, a stretch that dropped them 20 games under .500 for the first time all season and buried them 21 games back in the NL West.
This is the opener of a three-game set, and for Houston it’s a chance to get right against one of the league’s worst teams before a tougher stretch of the schedule.
What the Market Is Saying About This One
Books have installed Houston as a clear favorite, with the Astros moneyline sitting around -155 to -158 depending on the shop and San Francisco getting plus money in the +134 to +135 range. The total has moved around some, opening near 8.5 and settling closer to 7.5-8 at most outlets — a sign the market expects both bullpens, not just the offenses, to have a say in how this one plays out. There’s real value in shopping live MLB odds given how banged up San Francisco’s lineup and rotation depth have become down the stretch.

Houston’s offense has carried them even during the rough patches, while San Francisco has struggled to find any consistent rhythm at the plate or on the mound over its last 10 games.

Alvarez Is Playing a Different Sport Right Now
Yordan Alvarez has been the best hitter in baseball for stretches of this season, and his numbers back it up: a .322 average, 137 hits, 35 home runs, and 86 RBIs heading into this series. He’s the kind of bat that can single-handedly flip a game against a Giants pitching staff that’s already without key relief pieces. San Francisco’s counter is Rafael Devers, who’s driven in 64 runs but is hitting just .249 — a modest bat by comparison, especially with the Giants having shipped batting-title contender Luis Arraez out at the trade deadline, thinning an already stretched lineup even further.
San Francisco’s roster is also dealing with real attrition. Matt Chapman is out with an abdominal strain that could require season-ending surgery, and Harrison Bader remains on the 10-day IL with plantar fasciitis. Houston isn’t at full strength either — Brice Matthews (knee) and Carlos Correa (ankle, 60-day IL) are both sidelined — but the Astros have far more established production to lean on in the interim.
Hayden Wesneski is 0-3 with an 8.83 ERA in six career appearances against the Giants, three of them starts.
That history is the one thing working against Houston tonight. Wesneski, back from Tommy John surgery, has been sharp in his two starts since returning — a 3.86 ERA with 8 strikeouts across 11.2 innings, including a win over Toronto last week. But his track record specifically against this Giants lineup is ugly, and it’s worth factoring into how much you trust the favorite to roll early. On the other side, Blade Tidwell has quietly been excellent for San Francisco, sitting at a 3.18 ERA through his first three big-league starts, though he’s never faced Houston and is stepping into a lineup that includes the game’s hottest slugger.
Tidwell giving the Giants length would keep this closer than the moneyline suggests. But asking a rookie making his fourth career start to shut down Alvarez and a deep Astros order on the road from history is a lot to ask.
Prediction and Best Bet
Houston’s lineup depth and recent head-to-head dominance over San Francisco make them the play here, even with Wesneski’s rocky personal history against the Giants factoring in. The Astros have won four straight regular-season meetings against this Giants team, and there’s little reason to expect a last-place club missing multiple regulars to snap that now.
The pick:
- Prediction: Houston Astros 6, San Francisco Giants 3
- Best Bet: Houston Astros on the moneyline
Lay the price with Houston — this is a talent gap the Giants’ well-below-.500 record accurately reflects, and Alvarez alone gives Houston a path to cover even if Wesneski struggles early.
