What Betting Markets Are Saying About This Week’s NBA Playoff Games
The NBA Playoffs are delivering must-watch basketball, and prediction markets have never been more active. Four Game 1 matchups across the Eastern and Western Conference Semifinals are drawing tens of millions of dollars in trading volume on platforms like Polymarket, Kalshi, and FanDuel Predicts. Here is a look at what the public is saying about each game — and what you should know before tip-off.
Knicks vs. 76ers: The Biggest Market on the Board
The 76ers-Knicks Game 1 matchup at Madison Square Garden tops every prediction market leaderboard right now, with more than $846,000 in trading volume on the moneyline alone and over $1 million across all associated markets. Traders have priced the Knicks at roughly 70 cents on the dollar, giving New York about a 70 percent chance of winning Game 1.
The traditional sportsbook numbers align closely. The Knicks opened as 8.5-point favorites and have settled around -7.5, with the moneyline sitting near -295. The 76ers come in at +235 to +240 on the moneyline. Philadelphia finished the regular season 45-37 and earned their spot in the second round by eliminating the Boston Celtics, holding opponents under 100 points in multiple wins during that series.
New York went 53-29 in the regular season and dominated the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns have been the engines of the Knicks offense, and home-court advantage at Madison Square Garden is real — New York went 30-10 at home this season. The key injury watch is Joel Embiid, who is listed as probable with a right hip contusion after playing heavy minutes against Boston. If Embiid is less than 100 percent, covering a 7.5-point spread on the road becomes a tall order for Philadelphia.
Spurs vs. Timberwolves: The Wembanyama Showcase
The other headline matchup of the second round is San Antonio hosting Minnesota at Frost Bank Center, with prediction markets pricing the Spurs as massive favorites at around 80 percent to win Game 1. Traditional sportsbooks have installed San Antonio as a 13.5-point favorite with a moneyline in the range of -600 to -700.
The Spurs finished 62-20, one of the best records in the Western Conference, while the Timberwolves came in at 49-33. Victor Wembanyama, the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 24.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game this season and has been dominant in his first playoff run. He recorded 35 points in his playoff debut against Portland and has now led the Spurs to consecutive playoff series wins in their first postseason since 2019. Minnesota won two of its last five games entering this matchup and faces a brutal road environment. Rudy Gobert gives the Timberwolves interior size, but matching Wembanyama one-on-one is a different assignment entirely.
Thunder vs. Lakers: Luka Out, OKC Way Up
The Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers begin their Western Conference Semifinal series on May 5, and the market has spoken clearly: prediction markets have placed OKC’s win probability near 88 percent, and traditional books have the Thunder favored by 15.5 points with a moneyline around -1200. Lakers star Luka Doncic is confirmed out for Game 1 with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, and there is no clear timeline for his return. Jalen Williams is also listed as out for Oklahoma City with a hamstring issue, though his potential return during the series could shift the competitive picture.
Oklahoma City finished 64-18 during the regular season and swept Los Angeles four times by double digits, including a 139-96 rout in April. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who prediction markets give a 98 percent chance of winning the regular-season MVP award, is healthy and leads one of the deepest rosters in the league. LeBron James is expected to play for the Lakers, but asking him and Austin Reaves to overcome a 15-plus-point spread without Doncic is a significant ask. The live NBA odds continue to move as tip-off approaches.
Pistons vs. Cavaliers: The Central Division Rematch
Detroit is hosting Cleveland in the East Semifinals with the Pistons installed as slight home favorites. Prediction markets have this game priced roughly 57-43 in favor of Detroit, and traditional sportsbooks have the Pistons as 3.5-point favorites with a moneyline near -154. Detroit went 60-22 during the regular season, the best record in the Eastern Conference, while Cleveland finished 52-30 as the fourth seed in the East.
The Pistons won the Central Division this season behind Cade Cunningham, who averaged over 28 points per game, and a deep supporting cast. Cleveland counters with Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and James Harden. Little Caesars Arena in Detroit is sold out, and the public money is heavily on the under — roughly 94 percent of money wagered at major sportsbooks is riding on the total going under 215.5. Both teams play at a methodical pace and prioritize defense, which supports the under lean from bettors.
How to Use This Information
Prediction markets and traditional sportsbooks are telling similar stories across all four Game 1s: the Knicks, Spurs, Thunder, and Pistons are all favored, and the public is aligned behind them. The most interesting betting value, if any exists, is likely on the underdog spreads — particularly Philly at +7.5 against New York and Minnesota at +13.5 in San Antonio. Several sharp-money sources are leaning toward the 76ers to cover and the total in the Sixers-Knicks game to go under 212.5.
