3 Underdog Fantasy MLB Props for Wednesday, May 24

With only one NHL playoff game and a breather in the NBA postseason to compete with a full MLB schedule today, that time when baseball games and highlights dominate the summer feels closer and closer. For baseball fans and bettors, that’s a welcome sight.

Wednesday’s matchups on the diamond present some sweep opportunities for the Angels, Diamondbacks, and Giants, who all nabbed the first two games of their series against the Red Sox, Phillies, and Twins, respectively, to start the week. The D’Backs have ace Zac Gallen on the mound, who ranks in MLB’s top ten in wins, WHIP, and strikeouts, against struggling Ranger Suarez for Philadelphia.

The action begins at 12:35 pm ET with the series finale between the Rangers and Pirates from PNC Park in Pittsburgh and concludes with the third of a four-game set between the A’s and Mariners at 9:40 pm.

Our Underdog Fantasy props last Thursday bounced back with a 2-1 result after back-to-back losing efforts in the weeks prior. Tyler Wells K’d seven Angels over five innings in an O’s loss, and Aaron Judge racked up six total bases to sail past his total. The loss on the card came thanks to a 1-for-4 effort from Washington’s Lane Thomas against Miami.

Corbin Carroll OVER 1.5 Total Bases

Carroll has gone for 2+ total bases in five of his last seven games, including two multi-hit efforts, three doubles, and two home runs. The red-hot Diamondbacks, winners of four in a row and eight of ten, face Suarez on Wednesday afternoon.

Suarez has not gone more than four innings through two starts in May after suffering an injury to his throwing elbow in the World Baseball Classic. The lefty has given up seven runs in six innings, all of them earned, and is averaging a hefty 23 pitches per inning.

We like Carroll, who’s batting .304 against lefties this season, and his Arizona teammates to jump on Suarez early.

Shane McClanahan OVER 6.0 Strikeouts

Except for a tough outing in the Bronx, McClanahan has been a Cy Young-quality pitcher during May. In three other starts against Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, the MLB’s win leader has hurled 19 innings, allowed one run and 15 hits, and struck out 23 batters.

Toronto feasted on the Rays’ pitching yesterday and has been resilient against strikeouts this season, ranking 8th in the MLB in fewest strikeouts among all teams.

McClanahan will likely need to go at least six in this one to reach this mark, but we don’t expect that to be a problem for one of baseball’s best.

Paul Goldschmidt UNDER 1.5 Total Bases

After a torrid start to May, Goldschmidt has cooled off in the last ten days or so. He’s got three hits over his previous 25 at-bats, and, despite two of those base knocks occurring yesterday, we assign more of that explanation to Cincinnati pitcher Graham Aschroft’s 5.57 season-long ERA than Goldschmidt bouncing back fully from a mini-slump.

Tuesday was Ashcroft’s third start in his last four where he’s let up at least seven earned runs. Wednesday’s matchup for the Cards is a notable change, with Ben Lively and his 0.73 WHIP getting the start.

Because of these factors, we expect Goldschmidt to be held under 1.5 total bases.
