3 MLB Strikeout Props to Back on July 29: Schlittler, Skubal, Wheeler

Wednesday’s MLB slate is loaded with front-line arms on the mound, and three of them stand out as strong bets to go over their strikeout total. Cam Schlittler, Tarik Skubal, and Zack Wheeler are all pitching against lineups that are vulnerable to swing-and-miss stuff, and the numbers back it up in every case.

These aren’t just “good pitcher, bad offense” guesses — each of these three has been racking up strikeouts at an elite pace all season, and tonight’s matchups are about as favorable as it gets. Here’s the breakdown on all three, and why the over is the play.

Cam Schlittler Over Strikeouts vs. White Sox

Schlittler has been one of the best stories in baseball this year, and his 157 strikeouts through 20 starts are proof it’s not a fluke. He’s sitting at 10-6 with a 2.07 ERA and a tiny 0.93 WHIP, numbers that put him firmly in the American League Cy Young conversation. That kind of ERA usually means a pitcher is limiting contact through soft outs, but Schlittler’s doing it by missing bats outright — his strikeout total is on pace with the league’s top arms.

The matchup could not be better. Chicago’s lineup has been one of the league’s easiest to punch out, and Davis Martin’s own strikeout numbers on the other side (100 through 111 innings) show this White Sox lineup isn’t overwhelming anyone with contact skill either. When a pitcher with Schlittler’s whiff rate faces an offense that already strikes out at an above-average clip, the over on his strikeout total is exactly the kind of spot sharp bettors look for.

Beyond the raw stuff, Schlittler has had success missing bats against lineups without a lot of thump in the middle of the order, and Chicago fits that description on most nights. Betting the over here is as much about opportunity as it is about talent — he should have every chance to work deep into this game and rack up strikeouts the whole way.

Tarik Skubal Over Strikeouts vs. Orioles

Skubal doesn’t need much of an introduction at this point — he’s 7-5 with a 2.70 ERA and 110 strikeouts on the season, and his 10.7 K/9 rate is elite by any measure. A strikeout rate near 30% means roughly three of every ten hitters he faces are walking back to the dugout without putting the ball in play, and that number has actually trended up as the summer’s gone on.

Baltimore’s lineup is a good target for that kind of stuff. The Orioles have had stretches of scuffling against premium velocity and secondary pitches this year, and Skubal brings both in bulk. His strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at nearly 8.5-to-1 this season, which tells you he’s not just missing bats — he’s doing it while working ahead in counts, which is exactly the recipe for racking up strikeouts deep into a start.

The Tigers are also favored comfortably in this one, which usually means their ace gets the leash to go six-plus innings rather than getting pulled early in a blowout either direction. With Detroit’s bullpen performing well behind him, there’s no reason for Skubal to get rushed out of the game before he can pile up strikeouts against an Orioles order that’s shown real swing-and-miss tendencies of its own this season.

Zack Wheeler Over Strikeouts vs. Marlins

Wheeler has been in a groove for weeks now, and he brings a 9-3 record with a 2.39 ERA into this one. His strikeout rate sits at 29.4% with roughly 10.1 K/9, and he’s coming off a run where he’s posted eight-plus strikeouts in four straight starts. That’s not a hot streak that’s about to cool off against a lineup like Miami’s — if anything, this matchup plays right into his hands.

Marlins starter Ryan Gusto has struggled to miss bats himself this year, sitting at 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA, and while that’s about him rather than the lineup he’s facing, it’s a fair signal about the level of hitting talent on this Miami roster right now. Wheeler has already struck out this Marlins group eight and nine times in separate outings earlier this season, so there’s a real track record here, not just projection.

With Philadelphia big favorites on the moneyline, Wheeler should get every opportunity to work through the Miami order multiple times rather than get lifted early. Given his recent form and the way he’s handled this exact lineup already, the over on his strikeout total lines up as one of the stronger prop bets on the entire board tonight.

Lock These In

All three of these arms check the same boxes: elite recent form, favorable matchups against lineups that struggle to make contact, and enough run support or margin that manager decisions shouldn’t cut their outings short. When you can find that combination three times on the same night, it’s worth attacking. Check your sportsbook for the latest live MLB odds before locking in your numbers, since lines can shift closer to first pitch.

  • Cam Schlittler OVER Strikeouts (check your book for the current line)
  • Tarik Skubal OVER Strikeouts (check your book for the current line)
  • Zack Wheeler OVER Strikeouts (check your book for the current line)

Three aces, three favorable spots, and three strong reasons to trust the over tonight. If you’re building a parlay or betting these individually, this is as good a trio of strikeout props as you’ll find on the slate.
