3 MLB Strikeout Props to Back on July 22: Cole, Cavalli, Burns

Wednesday’s slate is loaded with power arms on the mound, and that means strikeout props are where the real value is hiding. Three pitchers stand out today for very different reasons — a proven ace working with diminished stuff, a former top prospect finally healthy and dominant, and a rookie flamethrower who might be the hardest arm to square up in baseball right now.

Here’s why these three strikeout lines are worth a look, broken down so the reasoning is easy to follow even if you’re new to prop betting.

Gerrit Cole Under 6.5 Strikeouts vs. Pirates

Gerrit Cole gets a homecoming matchup against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, and books have set his strikeout total at 6.5 with juice on both sides. The number looks aggressive once you check his actual 2026 workload: Cole is averaging 5.5 strikeouts per game across 10 starts this season, well under the line being offered.

That gap between his season average and the posted line is the whole story here. Cole is still a quality big-league starter, but he hasn’t consistently been the swing-and-miss machine he was in his prime. Betting the under isn’t betting against Cole’s talent — it’s betting that the market hasn’t adjusted the number down to match how he’s actually pitched all year. When a line sits a full strikeout above a pitcher’s season rate, that’s usually where the value lives.

Cade Cavalli Over 4.5 Strikeouts vs. Rockies at Coors Field

Cade Cavalli making a start at Coors Field usually sends bettors running for the exits given the ballpark’s reputation for inflating offense, but this is a case where the strikeout prop should be viewed separately from the run total. Cavalli has been excellent in 2026, posting a 5.67 K/9 with 119 strikeouts across 104.2 innings, a 6-4 record, and a 3.78 ERA.

Coors Field’s thin air helps fly balls travel, but it doesn’t inherently help hitters make contact — Cavalli’s swing-and-miss stuff still plays. With his strikeout prop line set at 4.5, he only needs to hit a number he’s cleared comfortably in the bulk of his starts this season. His season strikeout rate projects to roughly 5.6-5.8 punchouts over a typical outing, giving this over real cushion even in a hitter-friendly park.

Chase Burns Over 6.5 Strikeouts

Chase Burns has quickly become one of the must-watch arms in baseball, and the strikeout props reflect it. He’s averaging 6.5 strikeouts per game this season, which means his own season-long production is essentially the same number the book is using as the line — a rare true coin-flip on paper before factoring in his trajectory.

What tips this toward the over is simple: Burns throws as hard as almost anyone in the sport, and swing-and-miss stuff like his tends to trend upward as a season goes on and hitters see him for the first time. A pitcher sitting exactly at his own average on a strikeout line, with swings-and-misses this loud, is the kind of number sharp bettors lean into rather than avoid.

Lock These In

Strikeout props reward digging past the box score and into season-long trends, matchup context, and stuff quality — exactly what these three lines show when you line them up side by side. Always confirm the current number on your MLB odds before placing anything, since lines can shift closer to first pitch.

  • Gerrit Cole UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts vs. Pirates
  • Cade Cavalli OVER 4.5 Strikeouts vs. Rockies
  • Chase Burns OVER 6.5 Strikeouts

Each of these leans on a real gap between the posted number and how the pitcher has actually performed all season — that’s the kind of edge worth acting on.
