The Yankees have their best arm of the season on the mound in a must-win spot, and the Rays are one home win away from a stranglehold on this series.
Quick take:
- Pick: Yankees moneyline
- Why: Cam Schlittler has been the best pitcher in baseball on the road all season, and New York needs this evened up before the series shifts back to the Bronx
- The number to watch: Schlittler’s 1.16 road ERA, the lowest mark in the majors in 2026
Game 1 of this ALDS was a nightmare for New York’s offense. Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hit bid deep into the game and the Rays escaped with a 1-0 win, taking a 1-0 series lead and snapping their own seven-game postseason losing streak in the process. Now the Yankees turn to Cam Schlittler, their likely AL Cy Young winner, to even things up before the series shifts to Yankee Stadium.
Tampa Bay finished the regular season 98-64, the best record in the AL East, while New York went 93-68 and had to survive a Wild Card sweep of Boston just to get here. The Rays also won the regular-season series 7-6, so this is a genuine rivalry with real stakes attached.
Freddy Peralta has been excellent since arriving from the Mets at the Trade Deadline, going 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA over his last six starts and posting a sparkling 1.69 ERA in four home outings at Tropicana Field. That’s a legitimately scary recent run. But Schlittler’s full-season case is stronger: 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA and 239 strikeouts, and specifically dominant away from Yankee Stadium, where he led all of MLB in road ERA (1.16), strikeouts, opponent batting average (.153) and WHIP (0.74). He’s also faced Tampa Bay three times this year, going 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA. New York is currently -126 on the MLB odds board for Game 2, with the total sitting at 6.5 runs.

| Tampa Bay Rays | +1.5 (-180) | +108 | U 6.5 (-107) |
Both clubs enter Game 2 scorching hot by record, but the underlying numbers tell slightly different stories about how they got there.

New York is 6-4 over its last 10 games, hitting .246 as a team with a 3.38 ERA and outscoring opponents by 12 runs in that stretch. Tampa Bay is also 6-4 in its last 10, but with a lower .228 average, a better 2.83 ERA, and a plus-9 run differential. The Rays have the best team on-base percentage in the American League at .326, while Yankees pitching has quietly posted the league’s best collective ERA at 3.23. This series is shaping up as pitching-first, and Game 1 proved it.
Without Aaron Judge, who remains out as he recovers from a right calf strain and hasn’t been added to the ALDS roster for either round, the Yankees need their complementary bats to carry more weight than usual. Ben Rice led the team with 41 home runs and 97 RBIs during the regular season and is 12-for-37 with three doubles and four homers over his last 10 games — exactly the kind of form New York needs right now. Luis García Jr. quietly had a monster year too, hitting .277 with 30 home runs and 92 RBIs.
Yandy Díaz is hitting .293 with 26 doubles, 22 home runs and 85 RBIs, and he anchors a Rays lineup that doesn’t need Junior Caminero or Jonathan Aranda to go off every night to do damage.
That depth is what makes Tampa Bay dangerous even in a game where its “Big Three” goes quiet, as it mostly did in the low-scoring Game 1. Aranda actually delivered the lone big hit of that opener, and both Victor Mesa Jr. (1.015 OPS in September) and Richie Palacios (.981 OPS, five homers in September) finished the regular season white-hot. New York’s pitching staff, which led the AL in ERA, will need every bit of that form to hold up again.
Chandler Simpson, back after a minor foot issue, is 10-for-40 over his last 10 games atop the Rays’ lineup — a modest number, but his speed alone forces different decisions out of a Yankees defense that already made 97 errors this season, tied for the second-most in the league.
Schlittler’s road dominance is too significant to ignore, and New York’s offense, even without Judge, scored 18 runs across its two-game Wild Card sweep of Boston. A low-scoring pitchers’ duel favors whichever lineup gets the first crack of thunder, and Schlittler gives the Yankees the edge in keeping Tampa Bay’s lineup contained long enough for that to happen.
The pick:
Fade the home split just this once — Schlittler’s full body of work says this series gets evened up at one game apiece.
