Houston’s season came within one loss of ending Tuesday, and the Astros have to solve Sean Burke on Wednesday or it actually does.
Quick take:
- Pick: Astros -150
- Why: Hunter Brown has dominated this White Sox lineup all year and finally gets to pitch on regular rest with his season on the line
- The number to watch: Brown is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 14 strikeouts against just 2 walks in 13 career innings against Chicago this season
The Chicago White Sox lead this AL Wild Card Series 1-0 after a 6-3 win Tuesday that had zero business being that comfortable. Both teams turned to bullpen games in the opener, and Chicago’s worked far better — Colson Montgomery crushed a 432-foot solo homer, Sam Antonacci drove in two, and the White Sox built a 5-0 cushion before Houston’s offense ever got untracked. A Nelson Velázquez pinch-hit two-run blast in the fifth was the closest the Astros got.
Now Houston needs its ace. Hunter Brown gets the ball on four days’ rest, and if the Astros don’t win Wednesday at Daikin Park, their season — one built on an AL West title with a losing record — is over.
Despite dropping Game 1, the Astros open as sizable favorites for Game 2, with the line sitting at Astros -150 and White Sox +124, and the over/under set at 7.5 runs. Anyone tracking MLB odds all series has watched that number barely budge in Houston’s favor even after Tuesday’s loss. That’s not the market panicking about Tuesday — it’s the market pricing in the difference between a bullpen game and an actual ace. Brown was held off Game 1 specifically so he could pitch Wednesday on full rest, and the Astros are betting their season that decision pays off.

Sean Burke takes the ball for Chicago carrying an 11-7 record, a 3.34 ERA and 185 strikeouts across a career-best season — exactly the kind of workhorse the White Sox needed after using eight relievers just to get through Game 1. On the other side, Hunter Brown’s regular-season line (6-4, 3.19 ERA, 124 strikeouts) actually undersells how good he’s been recently; over his last seven starts he’s carried a 2.33 ERA, and he’s been flat-out unhittable against this specific opponent all year.
That head-to-head history matters. Brown has faced the White Sox twice in 2026, throwing 13 shutout-caliber innings with 14 strikeouts and just two walks. If that trend holds even partially, Chicago’s offense — which has feasted on lesser arms all series — could hit a wall.
There’s also a larger story hanging over this whole series. Houston won the AL West at 81-81, the worst record ever to claim a division title, and the Astros have now lost eight straight playoff games at home dating back to Game 1 of the 2023 ALDS. A loss Wednesday would extend that funk and end their season simultaneously. Chicago, meanwhile, is making its first postseason appearance since 2021 and became the first team in MLB history to follow three consecutive 100-loss seasons with a playoff berth — a genuinely remarkable turnaround built on exactly the kind of pitching depth Burke represents.
The two franchises also share real playoff scar tissue. Chicago swept Houston in the 2005 World Series, but the Astros flipped the script in the 2021 ALDS, eliminating the White Sox in four games. Wednesday adds another chapter, and for Houston, there’s no room left for a slow start.
Hunter Brown is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA against the White Sox this season, striking out 14 in 13 innings.
Houston’s bullpen is also fresher than Chicago’s right now. Bennett Sousa, Bryan Abreu and closer Josh Hader combined for just 35 pitches in Game 1, while Astros starter-turned-reliever Tatsuya Imai didn’t pitch at all. Chicago’s Grant Taylor, by contrast, threw a career-high 54 pitches closing out Tuesday’s win and isn’t likely to be available for a long look on short rest. If this game turns into a bullpen battle in the sixth or seventh, Houston has the clear edge in fresh arms.
Chicago’s lineup isn’t without answers, though. Colson Montgomery set the single-season MLB strikeout record this year with 227 whiffs, but he’s shown this series he can still change a game with one swing, and Chase Meidroth has reached base in bunches against arms not named Brown. The White Sox also get a boost simply from swinging first — they’ve forced Houston into desperation mode a game earlier than the Astros wanted, and desperation has a way of speeding hitters up against a pitcher who wants exactly the opposite.
Chicago has already banked the value of stealing Game 1, but Brown on regular rest against a lineup he’s owned all year is too significant an edge to fade. The White Sox bullpen — the same unit that got them here — is also running on fumes after Tuesday’s marathon, which tilts the middle innings toward Houston if the starters trade zeros into the fifth or sixth.
