Down 1-0 in a best-of-three, the Cubs are one loss away from an offseason that starts far earlier than expected.
Quick take:
- Pick: Padres -136 (moneyline)
- Why: San Diego’s bullpen depth and home crowd energy make it awfully hard to see Chicago’s offense solving a second straight San Diego arm after Tuesday’s no-show
- The number to watch: Nick Pivetta’s 2.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over his last eight starts
Game 1 wasn’t close. Fernando Tatis Jr. took the very first pitch of the series deep for the first leadoff homer in Padres postseason history, Manny Machado added a first-inning shot of his own, and Michael King carried a no-hitter into the seventh en route to an 8-0 rout at Petco Park. The Cubs, who won 89 games and entered as the slightly better team by both FanGraphs (54.1%) and Baseball-Reference (56.8%) NLDS-odds models, managed a grand total of zero runs.
Now it’s win-or-go-home in San Diego for a Cubs team that beat these same Padres in last year’s Wild Card round.
The line has shifted since Tuesday’s blowout, and it’s easy to see why. San Diego opened as a modest home favorite for this series and is now sitting around -136 on the moneyline for Game 2, with Chicago hovering near +115 and the total set at 7.5 runs. Bettors weighing a series-ending wager can check the latest MLB odds before locking anything in. The market isn’t just pricing in Nick Pivetta’s form — it’s pricing in a Cubs lineup that looked completely out of sync a night earlier, including NL MVP favorite Pete Crow-Armstrong striking out on three pitches to open the game.
| Wednesday, September 30 at 10:00 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Chicago Cubs | +1.5 (-198) | +116 | O 7.5 (106) |
| San Diego Padres | -1.5 (155) | -134 | U 7.5 (-130) |
The Padres arrive red-hot and now have the emotional lift of an emphatic Game 1; the Cubs need to prove Tuesday was an aberration and not a preview.

Kevin Gausman gets the ball for Chicago, and his postseason résumé is genuinely one of the best in the sport: a 2.93 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across six career playoff appearances, with 30.2 innings pitched that stand as the most in a single postseason in Cubs franchise history. He closed the regular season strong too, going 8-4 with a 2.90 ERA over his final 14 starts. If there’s a version of Gausman who shows up built for October, that’s the guy Chicago needs Wednesday night.
The problem is who’s standing in the other dugout. Tatis and Machado combined for three of San Diego’s eight runs in Game 1, and Xander Bogaerts — even in a down offensive year at .231 — has still been a professional at-bat all series, part of a lineup that made Gausman’s counterpart look unhittable. San Diego also gets Nick Pivetta on the mound, and he’s been arguably the best pitcher in either rotation since returning from a lengthy IL stint: 2.86 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 42 strikeouts against just eight walks over 34.2 innings, including a stretch of just three runs allowed in 18.2 September innings.
Pivetta has a 2.63 road ERA and a career-best 1.01 WHIP over his last eight starts combined — exactly the form profile that shuts down a slumping lineup.
Gausman’s second-half surge is real. So is Pivetta’s. The tiebreaker here is which offense is more likely to break through first, and after Tuesday, that’s not a rhetorical question for the Cubs — it’s the whole series.
Chicago’s lineup is too talented to get shut out twice in a row, and Gausman’s playoff track record earns him the benefit of the doubt for at least a competitive start. But San Diego has the better bullpen, the building on their side, and a pitcher trending in the exact right direction at the exact right time.
The pick:
San Diego doesn’t need to be dominant again — just good enough behind Pivetta to finish off a series that’s already trending firmly their way.
