Washington has won seven straight and still can’t shake nearly double-digit underdog status walking into Las Vegas.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Mystics +8.5
  • Why: Washington’s defense and depth have carried a seven-game streak while the Aces limp in on a two-game skid with their stars fresh off a rest day
  • The number to watch: Mystics are 8-2 over their last 10 games, the best mark in the WNBA

The Mystics (19-12) head to Michelob ULTRA Arena riding the hottest streak in the league, a seven-game run that’s pushed them into the thick of the Eastern Conference race. The Aces (22-11) are still the more talented team on paper, anchored by MVP-caliber production from A’ja Wilson, but Las Vegas has dropped two straight and just got embarrassed 111-71 by the Liberty on Sunday while resting Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young. That trio should be back in the fold for this one.

Tip-off is set for 10:00 PM ET on Tuesday, August 11. Bettors weighing a same-game parlay or first checking live sports betting odds will find plenty of value on either side of this spread.

Why Vegas Is Still Favored Despite the Skid

Books have the Aces as roughly 8.5-point home favorites, with the total sitting around 168.5 and Las Vegas moneyline pricing in near a 70% implied win probability. That number reflects roster talent more than recent form — Wilson, Gray and Young were all rested for Sunday’s blowout loss, and oddsmakers are betting a healthy Aces squad looks nothing like the group that just got run off the floor by New York. Washington’s spread value comes almost entirely from that gap between “who Las Vegas actually is” and “who Las Vegas looked like on one back-to-back road trip.”

The form gap here is stark: Washington has lost just twice in its last ten games, while Las Vegas has dropped back-to-back outings for the first time in months.

Citron and the Mystics Defense Are the Real Story

Sonia Citron has quietly turned into Washington’s best player, averaging a career-high 17.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists a night while shooting 46.3% from the floor. Kiki Iriafen (15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds) and Shakira Austin (16.2 points, 9.6 rebounds) give the Mystics two legitimate double-double threats up front, and that combination has helped Washington control the glass and limit second-chance opportunities during the win streak. The Mystics also beat the Aces 100-99 back on July 22, proof this isn’t a total mismatch even with Las Vegas at full strength.

Las Vegas still runs through Wilson, who’s putting up 26.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 blocks a game — top-five numbers across nearly every major statistical category in the league. Jackie Young (17.8 points) and Chelsea Gray (7.1 assists, the team’s floor general) round out a Big Three that’s capable of erasing an eight-point deficit in a heartbeat when healthy and engaged. All three were held out of Sunday’s loss to New York purely for rest and travel management, not injury, which is exactly why Vegas remains such a heavy favorite here despite the two-game skid on the scoreboard.

That’s a fair distinction for bettors to make. A team resting its top three scorers against a red-hot Liberty squad on the road is a very different animal than a team getting outplayed at full strength. The Aces still have the No. 1 offense in the league in field-goal percentage and rank top-three in points per game, and none of that erodes just because Wilson sat one out.

Washington is 8-2 in its last 10 games, the best 10-game stretch of any team in the WNBA right now.

That’s the crux of this pick. Vegas has the star power, but stars coming off a scheduled rest day and a lopsided road loss don’t always flip a switch instantly, especially against a team playing with this much confidence. The Aces are also down Janiah Barker for the season and missing Dana Evans and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, thinning out a frontcourt rotation that already leans heavily on Wilson and NaLyssa Smith.

Washington’s own absences — Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (personal) and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (coach’s decision) — are manageable given how deep this current rotation has played. If the Mystics can hang around the paint with Iriafen and Austin and let Citron operate in space, an 8.5-point cushion is plenty to cover, even in a loss.

Prediction and Best Bet

Vegas should win this one at home behind Wilson, but Washington’s defense and depth make it a closer game than the number suggests. The Aces are talented enough to close the gap in the fourth quarter, and that’s exactly the kind of finish that keeps a nearly two-touchdown spread in play for the underdog.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Las Vegas Aces 88, Washington Mystics 81
  2. Best Bet: Washington Mystics +8.5

Fade the number, not the Aces — Washington’s seven-game streak has been built on defense and depth that travels well, even against A’ja Wilson.
