Thunder vs. Grizzlies: What Prediction Markets Say About Friday’s NBA Showdown

Friday night in Memphis brings a matchup between two teams sitting at the same 6-2 record, and the betting world is not treating it like a coin flip. Prediction markets give the Oklahoma City Thunder a clear edge over the Memphis Grizzlies when they tip off at 8 p.m. ET at FedExForum.

What the Prediction Markets Are Saying

If you are new to prediction markets, think of them as a way to see what a crowd of traders collectively believes will happen. Each side of a market trades at a price between zero and one dollar, and that price doubles as a probability. For this game, the Thunder are priced at roughly 59.5 cents, which implies about a 59.5 percent chance to win, while the Grizzlies sit near 40.5 cents.

That is a meaningful gap, but it is far from a lock. Traders put around $132,000 into this market over the past day, a sign that plenty of people have an opinion on a game between two teams with identical records. The market settles on the final score, overtime included, so there is no such thing as a tie.

How Sportsbooks See the Game

Traditional sportsbook lines tell a similar story. Oklahoma City is a 3.5-point favorite with a moneyline around -156, while Memphis comes back at roughly +132 on the moneyline. The total is set between 224.5 and 225.5 points, which points to a game expected to land in the middle of the pack for scoring. Odds shift throughout the day, so you can always check the latest live NBA odds before tip-off.

The betting public has strong feelings here. Roughly 81 percent of bets have landed on the Thunder, a lopsided split that shows how popular Oklahoma City is as a pick. One popular projection model has the Thunder winning about 62.8 percent of the time and forecasts a final score of 114-110, which is a tight game even when the favorite comes out on top.

The Star Power Behind the Favorite

The biggest reason for the Thunder’s price is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Oklahoma City guard is projected to lead all scorers in this game at about 31.3 points, along with roughly 7.0 assists and 4.1 rebounds. When one player can be counted on for that kind of production, it gives a team a stable floor on a night when other pieces are missing.

Oklahoma City is also getting a boost from Ajay Mitchell, projected at around 18.5 points. That matters because the Thunder come into this game thin in several spots, with a long list of players ruled out. Jaylin Williams, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace, Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber are all listed as out, so the depth chart looks very different from a fully healthy roster.

Can Memphis Pull the Upset?

The Grizzlies have their own injury concerns, with Isaiah Stewart and Scotty Pippen both out and Cedric Coward questionable with a wrist injury. Even so, Memphis has scoring options that keep this game interesting. Ty Jerome is projected for about 21.9 points, and rookie Cameron Boozer is pegged at around 16.2, with Coward at 14.2 if he is cleared to play.

Home court also matters. Memphis is playing in front of its own fans, and a 40.5 percent market price still leaves room for an upset. If you are looking at prediction markets for the first time, it is a good reminder that a 60-40 split means the underdog wins four times out of every ten. If you are weighing whether to bet on any outcome, responsible gambling resources are worth a look first.

The Bottom Line

Both teams are 6-2, but the markets, sportsbooks and models all lean toward Oklahoma City, largely because of Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder’s ability to win even with a heavily banged-up roster. One projection model has the Thunder ahead 114-110, which would fit the roughly 3.5-point spread almost exactly. With a total hovering near 225, the game looks like it will be competitive for most of the night, and a Memphis upset would not shock anyone watching the market.

Keep an eye on the injury report before tip-off, especially on Coward’s status, because a late change on either side could move the prices quickly.
