Rays vs Braves Prediction: Reynaldo López and Atlanta’s Bats Bounce Back at Truist Park

Two division leaders, one series that could shape the last few weeks of the regular season — the Rays and Braves meet again Wednesday night with Tampa Bay already up a game and looking to bury Atlanta in its own building.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Braves +1.5
  • Why: Atlanta gets a much better version of Reynaldo López than the raw Griffin Jax the Rays are throwing out, and this lineup has too much thump to lay down again after Tuesday’s blowout loss.
  • The number to watch: Griffin Jax’s 8.00 ERA out of the bullpen vs. his 3.16 ERA as a starter — Tampa Bay needs the starter version to show up.

Tampa Bay (86-58) and Atlanta (85-59) both sit atop their respective divisions, and this midweek set at Truist Park has the feel of a preview for October. The Rays took Tuesday’s opener 7-1 behind Freddy Peralta, continuing a pattern where they’ve now won six of their last 10 overall. The Braves, meanwhile, have been streaky — alternating wins and losses over their last five games against Washington and Philadelphia, including a gutting 0-1 loss to Jesus Luzardo on Monday.

What the Odds Say About This Rematch

Books have made Atlanta a home favorite for the rematch, with the Braves sitting around -122 on the moneyline and Tampa Bay getting +104 as the road side. The run line has the Rays at -1.5 (+165) and the Braves at +1.5 (-190), with the total set at 8.5. You can track how that line moves throughout the day on live MLB odds before first pitch. That movement makes sense given who’s on the mound: Reynaldo López (4-3, 3.64 ERA) gives Atlanta a real starter, while Griffin Jax (6-10, 3.82 ERA) is still adjusting to a rotation role after years as a reliever.

Both clubs are 6-4 over their last 10, but the shapes of those stretches look different — Tampa Bay’s been carried by its lineup clicking in bursts, while Atlanta has needed its rotation to bail out a middling offense.

Jax’s Split Personality on the Mound

The most interesting subplot here is Griffin Jax himself. Acquired by Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, Jax has been stretched out as a starter for the first time in his career, and the results have been a genuine tale of two pitchers. Over 82.2 innings as a starter, he owns a 3.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a sharp 90:23 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Out of the bullpen this year, though, he’s been rocked to an 8.00 ERA and 1.89 WHIP across just nine innings. If Wednesday’s version of Jax looks like the starter, not the reliever, Tampa Bay’s rotation depth down the stretch gets a lot scarier.

On the other side, Reynaldo López has quietly been one of Atlanta’s more reliable arms, and he’s coming off a stretch where the Braves have leaned on strong rotation performances — Atlanta’s staff carries a 3.56 ERA as a team — to cover for an offense that ranks just 14th in MLB in OPS at .722.

Junior Caminero leads the Rays with 38 home runs and 92 RBIs, the exact kind of bat that can turn a rotation still finding its footing into a 90-win team anyway.

Caminero isn’t the only Ray hitting his stride. Yandy Díaz is slashing .305 with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs, and Jonathan Aranda has quietly put together 19 homers and 86 RBIs of his own. That’s a three-headed middle of the order that can punish a Braves bullpen that’s had its share of shaky innings this season.

Atlanta’s counter is Ronald Acuña Jr., who has been up and down since returning from his hamstring issue but has looked much more like himself lately — he’s hit safely in four straight games, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning of Sunday’s win over Philadelphia. For the season he’s at .255/.351/.446 with 16 home runs, 45 RBIs, 52 runs and 20 stolen bases, numbers that undersell how dangerous he’s been over the last two weeks.

Prediction and Best Bet

This is a game that should hinge on which version of Griffin Jax shows up and whether Atlanta’s lineup can find enough traffic against a Rays bullpen that’s been excellent all year. With López on the mound and Acuña heating up at the right time, the Braves have the edge to bounce back at home after Tuesday’s lopsided loss.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Atlanta Braves 5, Tampa Bay Rays 3
  2. Best Bet: Braves +1.5

Backing the run line gives some cushion in what should be a tighter game than Tuesday’s rout, with López settling Atlanta down after a rough start to the series.
