The Texas Rangers have no room left for a bad start, and they’re about to hand the ball to a pitcher who hasn’t started a game in seven weeks.
Quick take:
- Pick: Rangers -115 on the moneyline
- Why: Texas still controls its own destiny in the AL West and Minnesota has nothing left to play for
- The number to watch: Nathan Eovaldi has allowed 5 earned runs in just 8.2 relief innings since returning from his elbow injury
Texas and Houston enter Saturday dead even at 79-81 in the AL West with two games remaining, and because the Astros hold the tiebreaker, the Rangers can’t settle for a split — they need to finish ahead outright or their season ends without so much as a wild card cushion to fall back on. A loss Saturday paired with an Astros win would eliminate Texas on the spot. Minnesota, meanwhile, is playing out the string at 76-84, already locked out of the postseason picture and simply looking to spoil where it can at Target Field.
Friday’s series opener was about as ugly as it gets for Texas. Jacob deGrom matched a career high by allowing eight earned runs in a 10-2 blowout loss, the kind of result that makes Saturday’s must-win stakes even sharper. Now the Rangers turn to Nathan Eovaldi, who hasn’t started a game since August 7 and will be working on an unusual leash for a pitcher trying to help save a season.
What the Number Says About This Line
Books have Texas as a modest favorite, with the moneyline sitting around -115 for the Rangers and +105 for Minnesota, while the total has settled around 8 runs. That’s a tight number for a game with such lopsided stakes attached, and it reflects real uncertainty about Eovaldi’s workload more than any doubt about which team wants this game more. Texas has cooled off at the worst possible time, dropping its last game in ugly fashion, while Minnesota has quietly won its last two despite having nothing tangible to play for. Here’s how both clubs have trended over their last stretch of games and how this season series has broken down so far.

Eovaldi’s Leash Is the Whole Game
Eovaldi is making his first start since early August after spending the last several weeks working back from an elbow injury in short relief stints. In four appearances since returning on September 12, he’s been rocked for five earned runs over just 8.2 innings, and he’s never thrown more than 46 pitches in any of those outings. That’s not the profile of a pitcher who can be counted on to go five or six innings on short notice, which puts real pressure on a Texas bullpen that’s already been leaned on hard down the stretch.
Minnesota counters with Bailey Ober, who’s been a steady if unspectacular innings-eater all year at 7-6 with a 4.21 ERA and 91 strikeouts. Ober isn’t going to overpower anyone, but he limits walks and has been durable, which matters against a Rangers lineup that’s scuffled at the plate in this series.
Eovaldi has failed to record a strikeout in his last relief appearance and has needed at least 29 pitches to escape a single inning clean.
That’s the crux of it. If Eovaldi can give Texas even three or four clean innings, the Rangers’ lineup and bullpen depth should be enough to get past a Twins team with nothing on the line. If he struggles early the way deGrom did Friday, Texas is staring at burning through relievers in a game it absolutely cannot afford to lose, with Sunday’s finale looming right behind it and even less margin for error.
It’s a delicate balancing act for Texas manager Bruce Bochy. Push Eovaldi too far and risk another injury setback heading into a potential postseason run; pull him too early and the bullpen has to cover more innings than it’s built for on back-to-back nights. Either way, the Rangers’ margin for error is razor thin.
Worth noting: Minnesota has won the season series so far, and this Twins club has already shown Friday it’s capable of putting a crooked number on the board against a shaky Rangers starter. That history keeps this from being an automatic Texas cover, even with so much more riding on the outcome for the visitors.
Prediction and Best Bet
Elimination-game urgency is a real thing in September, and the Rangers have too much invested in these final two games to let Eovaldi’s short leash sink them without a fight. Expect Texas to piece things together with an early hook for its starter and lean on its bullpen to close it out.
The pick:
- Prediction: Rangers 5, Twins 3
- Best Bet: Rangers on the moneyline
Texas has more urgency, a deeper bullpen to lean on, and a division still theirs to lose — that combination is enough to get the moneyline home even with Eovaldi’s uncertain workload.
