Houston just reminded the Rangers exactly why the AL West race feels like a knife fight, and now Texas has to walk right back into Daikin Park and answer.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Astros moneyline
  • Why: Houston’s lineup is scorching hot and Jacob deGrom is walking into a road ballpark against a team that just battered his rotation mate 11-2
  • The number to watch: Ronel Blanco’s 8.10 ERA since returning from Tommy John surgery

The Rangers dropped Friday’s series opener 11-2, their third straight loss, and it flipped first place in the division to Houston by half a game. Texas still sports a respectable 7-6, 3.67 ERA season from Jacob deGrom, but the Astros have won nine of their last ten and look like a completely different team than the club that was 11 games under .500 in late May.

An AL West Race That Flipped Overnight

This series matters. Houston and Texas have traded the division lead back and forth for months, and Friday’s blowout was Houston’s clearest statement yet that the second half belongs to them. Books have adjusted quickly — Houston is sitting as a moneyline favorite in the neighborhood of -122, with Texas priced around +112 to +150 depending on the book, and the total has settled near 7.5 to 9 runs given how both bullpens have performed lately.

Yordan Alvarez and a Lineup That Won’t Let Up

Yordan Alvarez is hitting .321 with 35 home runs and 80 RBI, numbers that put him squarely in the middle of any AL MVP conversation, and he reached base four times in Friday’s rout. Isaac Paredes added a home run of his own, part of a two-hit night, while Yainer Diaz tied a career high with four hits including a homer. Christian Walker chipped in too, giving Houston a lineup that’s clicking from top to bottom right when it matters most.

Texas isn’t without its own answers. Corey Seager made his return from a lower back issue that cost him nearly a month and went 2-for-3 with a double on Friday, an encouraging sign for a Rangers offense that’s been missing its best hitter. Joc Pederson also homered in the loss. But Texas is dealing with real attrition — Wyatt Langford (hamstring) and Josh Jung (calf) are both out, and starter Jack Leiter remains on the injured list following ankle surgery.

Houston has won nine of its last ten games and reclaimed the division lead for the first time since sharing it back on April 6.

That kind of surge is hard to bet against, especially with the way Houston’s bats have looked. Ronel Blanco, working back from Tommy John surgery, has been rough in his return — an 8.10 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP over just 10 innings, allowing four home runs already. deGrom gives Texas a real edge on the mound with his 132 strikeouts in 110.1 innings, but he’s walking into a lineup that just dropped 18 hits on his own rotation.

Jeremy Peña is working his way back from a calf strain and adds another dangerous bat once he’s fully up to speed, while Carlos Correa remains out for the season after ankle surgery — a loss Houston has clearly found ways to play through given its recent stretch.

Prediction and Best Bet

Houston’s lineup has too much momentum right now, and Blanco’s shaky return from surgery makes this a tough spot for a Texas offense that’s starting to find its footing again with Seager back. The Astros’ bats should be able to do enough damage even against a quality arm like deGrom.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Houston Astros 6, Texas Rangers 4
  2. Best Bet: Astros on the moneyline

Ride the hot hand until Texas proves it can slow this Houston lineup down — right now, nothing suggests it can. For more on how the odds are shaping up around baseball’s biggest series, check the live MLB odds hub before first pitch.
