Prediction Markets Favor Eagles Over Bears on Monday Night as Caleb Williams Injury Shakes Up Week 4

Monday Night Football brings a matchup with an unusual amount of intrigue for a Week 4 game between a 2-0 team and a 1-1 team. The Philadelphia Eagles head to Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears on September 28, and prediction markets have moved hard in one direction over the past few days — not because of anything the Eagles did, but because of who won’t be on the field for Chicago.

What the Markets Are Saying

Prediction markets have Philadelphia as a clear favorite heading into Monday night, pricing the Eagles at roughly 64.5% to win outright against 35.5% for the Bears, based on 24-hour trading volume north of $1.3 million on the matchup. That lines up closely with where sportsbooks have settled: Eagles moneyline prices in the -192 to -209 range, Bears in the +160 to +174 range, with Philadelphia also laying 3.5 points and the total sitting between 41.5 and 42.5. Live NFL odds continue to shift slightly as more injury news trickles in, but the direction has been consistent since Saturday.

ESPN’s own matchup predictor is a touch more conservative on Philadelphia, projecting the Eagles at 57.3% to Chicago’s 42.4% — still a clear edge, but not quite as lopsided as what bettors are pricing into the point spread. That gap between model and market is worth watching, because it usually means the market is reacting to something the raw numbers haven’t fully absorbed yet.

Why the Line Moved So Fast

That something is Caleb Williams. Chicago’s starting quarterback is officially out with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, an injury expected to sideline him for three to four weeks. According to reporting from Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, there’s no ambiguity here — Williams will not play Monday night. Per Covers.com, this game was sitting at Philadelphia as just a 1.5-point underdog on the early lookahead line before the injury broke. Once it did, the number swung more than four points the other way, landing at Eagles -3.5.

It doesn’t stop with Williams, either. Backup Tyson Bagent is questionable after entering the concussion protocol, though he was a full participant in Saturday’s practice and appears to have a real chance to start. If Bagent also can’t go, the job falls to veteran Case Keenum, who would be making his first start of the season under significant pressure on a national stage. Whichever of the two ends up behind center, Chicago’s offense projects to look very different than the one that hung 59 points on Carolina two weeks ago.

Digging Into the Matchup

Philadelphia arrives at 2-0, having ground out a 24-20 road win over Tennessee and a 24-22 home win over Washington. The Eagles have outscored opponents by a modest 48-42 margin through two games — competitive, unspectacular football that has still produced two wins. Oddly, Philadelphia is 0-2 against the spread this season despite the perfect record straight up, a reminder that the Eagles haven’t exactly been blowing teams out even while winning.

Chicago’s form has been the definition of erratic. The Bears looked unstoppable in a 59-37 demolition of Carolina in Week 2, then were shut out offensively in a 3-9 home loss to Minnesota in Week 3. That kind of swing says as much about matchup-dependent execution as it does about talent, and it’s exactly the profile of a team vulnerable to a further step back at quarterback.

The injury report cuts both ways for Philadelphia. Wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is out with an ankle injury, tight end Dallas Goedert is sidelined with a knee issue, and starting tackle Fred Johnson won’t play either. That thins out the pass-catching corps significantly, and DeVonta Smith — while playing through a minor hamstring issue with no formal designation — has failed to top 72.5 receiving yards in eight of his last nine games, averaging closer to 55 yards per outing. The name to watch is Saquon Barkley. The Eagles running back is dealing with a stinger but was a full practice participant and remains Philadelphia’s clearest offensive weapon with Goedert and Brown sidelined and Smith’s role muted. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter is also full-go despite a wrist issue, which matters against a Chicago offensive line trying to protect a new starting quarterback.

Chicago’s own defensive front is beat up, with Shemar Turner (knee/ACL) and Noah Sewell (Achilles) both out and cornerback Kyler Gordon dealing with a calf issue. Guard Joe Thuney is full-go after a planned rest day, and defensive back Tyrique Stevenson is playing through a hamstring problem of his own.

Prediction Markets Point to a Low-Scoring Night for Chicago

The clearest signal in the numbers is the team total for the Bears, where the market has Chicago’s over/under points line set at 13.5 — a strikingly low number for a home team, and a direct reflection of how much the quarterback change is expected to limit the offense. Covers.com’s staff prediction backs the same idea, favoring the under on the 42.5-point game total. When a defense-optional shootout suddenly becomes a game about whether Chicago’s backup quarterback situation can produce even two touchdowns, the read across markets and sportsbooks lines up: this is Philadelphia’s game to control, and the number one question is by how much.

Given the health of Barkley and Carter, the shakiness at Chicago’s most important position, and a Bears defense missing two key front-seven pieces, the smart plays here trend Philadelphia. The Eagles moneyline offers value relative to the market’s own implied probability gap, while the Eagles -3.5 spread and the game’s under both align with what the injury news is telling bettors. None of this guarantees a comfortable night in a stadium that’s given Chicago plenty of history, but the fundamentals and the market consensus are pointing the same direction heading into Monday night.
