Jesús Luzardo has been nearly unhittable since June, and the Diamondbacks still have to find a way to slow him down anyway.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Phillies -136 on the moneyline
  • Why: Luzardo’s 1.90 ERA since June 10 is the best pitching form in this series, and Philadelphia is rolling with a 20-7 August behind it
  • The number to watch: Luzardo’s 123 strikeouts since June 10

The Phillies took the opener of this three-game set at Chase Field on Monday, grinding out a 2-1 win behind Aaron Nola and closing it with Jhoan Duran’s 29th save. That pushed Philadelphia to 78-60 and kept them 5.0 games up in the Wild Card race, comfortably positioned as they push toward October. Arizona, at 73-66, is fighting for its playoff life in a crowded NL West/Wild Card picture, and dropping the opener with a fading rotation behind them made Tuesday’s game 2 a must-win.

Now it’s Jesús Luzardo’s turn, and this is arguably the best pitching matchup the Diamondbacks have faced in this series. He and Eduardo Rodriguez both have a case as the best left-hander on the mound Tuesday night, but Luzardo’s recent stretch gives Philadelphia the edge.

What the Betting Market Sees in This Pitchers’ Duel

Oddsmakers have installed the Phillies as moneyline favorites, with the line hovering around -136 to -140 depending on the book, while Arizona sits in the +117 to +125 range. The spread has Philadelphia at -1.5 (+125 to +133) and the Diamondbacks at +1.5 (-149 to -151), with the total set at 7.5 runs. That gap reflects two things: Philadelphia’s superior bullpen depth with Duran locking down the ninth, and the fact that Luzardo has simply been the better pitcher over the past three months. Some models put Arizona’s win probability closer to 46%, which makes the home side interesting on the run line if you believe in Rodriguez, but taking Philadelphia to win outright is the cleaner side of this number.

Recent Form

Both clubs have played well over their last 10 games, but Philadelphia’s August surge — a 20-7 mark, one of the best months in baseball — carries more weight given the level of competition. Below is a look at how each team and their head-to-head history stacks up.

Luzardo’s Stuff Versus a Diamondbacks Lineup Missing Pieces

Luzardo enters at 12-5 with a 3.09 ERA on the season, but that overall number actually understates how good he’s been lately. Since June 10, he’s posted a 1.90 ERA with 123 strikeouts, the kind of stretch that turns a solid starter into a legitimate difference-maker in a pennant race. His fastball-changeup combination has given left-handed and right-handed hitters alike trouble, and Arizona’s lineup — already without Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for most of the summer and just getting Ketel Marte back from a knee injury — doesn’t have the depth to consistently work counts against him.

Rodriguez has been quietly excellent in his own right, sitting at 14-4 with a 2.50 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP, and he’s gone at least 5 2/3 innings in seven straight starts. He’s not overpowering — his 6.6 K/9 is well below Luzardo’s rate — but he commands the zone and has kept Arizona in games behind a rotation gutted by injuries to Zac Gallen, Corbin Burnes, Michael Soroka and Ryne Nelson. That depth problem is really the story of this series: Arizona is one of the better offensive teams in the league on paper, but its pitching staff has been stretched thin for weeks, and it shows in a run differential of just +4 compared to Philadelphia’s +30.

Philadelphia has been outscoring opponents by 30 runs on the season, more than six times Arizona’s +4 differential.

That gap is the clearest signal in this matchup. Philadelphia isn’t winning close games by accident — the roster is deeper, the bullpen is more trustworthy with Duran anchoring the ninth, and the offense has had steadier production even with J.T. Realmuto occasionally getting a scheduled rest day, as he did in Monday’s opener. Arizona has to lean on Rodriguez to keep this one close and hope its lineup, buoyed by Marte’s return, can scratch out runs against a pitcher who’s been one of the best in baseball for three months.

Roster expansion on September 1 also brings some fresh faces into the mix on both sides, including Rafael Marchán rejoining Philadelphia’s catching group, but neither club is likely to lean heavily on new additions in a game with this much on the line. If you’re tracking value across the market, it’s worth checking live MLB odds before locking in a bet, since lines can shift closer to first pitch.

Prediction and Best Bet

Luzardo’s recent form is the deciding factor here. Arizona’s lineup is talented enough to make things interesting, but a rotation missing four key arms puts a lot of pressure on Rodriguez to be perfect, and Philadelphia’s deeper roster gives it more paths to a win even in a tight, low-scoring game.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies 4, Arizona Diamondbacks 2
  2. Best Bet: Phillies on the moneyline

Take Philadelphia here — the pitching matchup and the underlying numbers both point the same direction, and at -136 or better, it’s a fair price for the more complete team on the mound Tuesday night.
