San Diego has won the first two games of this series by a combined three runs, and now they’re one win away from a sweep at Oracle Park that would keep the pressure on in a crowded NL Wild Card chase.

Quick take:

  • Pick: San Diego Padres moneyline (-130)
  • Why: Nick Pivetta’s recent form against Logan Webb’s is a real starting-pitcher gap, and the Padres have won six straight overall
  • The number to watch: Padres are 7-3 over their last 10 games; Giants are missing double-digit players to injury

San Diego (80-68) sits second in the NL West but very much alive in the Wild Card picture, riding a six-game winning streak into the finale of this three-game set. San Francisco (62-87) has nothing left to play for competitively, sitting fourth in the division and 18.5 games back of a playoff spot, but that hasn’t stopped Rafael Devers from putting together one of the best stretches of his season at exactly the wrong time for the Padres’ pitching staff.

Why the Number Says San Diego, Even on the Road

The Padres opened as road favorites at -130 to -135 across most books, with San Francisco getting plus money between +110 and +115. The run line has San Diego at -1.5 (+135/+136) and the Giants at +1.5 (-164), with the total sitting at 6.5 to 7 runs. That’s a fairly heavy number for a team playing on the road against a sub-.500 opponent, but it lines up with how lopsided this pitching matchup looks on paper — and with the Padres already up 2-0 in the series.

If you want to track how that number moves closer to first pitch, HR’s MLB odds page updates in real time. Books have kept the Padres price relatively steady since the series opened, which itself says something about how the market views this pitching matchup.

Pivetta-Webb Is the Real Edge

Nick Pivetta takes the ball for San Diego with a 3.43 ERA and a sharp 0.95 WHIP over his recent workload, striking out 26 batters in his last stretch of starts. Logan Webb, by contrast, carries an 8-8 record with a 4.10-4.11 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP — a solid full-season log for an innings-eater, but one that’s trended the wrong way lately. Pivetta has posted a 1.38 ERA over his last three starts; Webb has allowed a 7.71 ERA over his last three. That’s not a small split.

Manny Machado has been part of the problem for opposing pitchers all series, sitting on 26 home runs and 78 RBI even with his average dipping to .221 — the power hasn’t gone anywhere, and neither has Fernando Tatis Jr., who launched a home run in Saturday’s 7-6 win and is now hitting .286 with 21 homers, 73 RBI and 34 stolen bases on the year. Both are doing damage against a Giants pitching staff that’s been stretched thin by injuries to Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt and Marcelo Mayer, among others.

Pivetta has a 1.38 ERA over his last three starts; Webb has allowed a 7.71 ERA over his last three.

San Francisco isn’t without its own thunder. Devers has been on an absolute tear, hitting .351 with seven home runs over his last 10 games, and he’s the one hitter in this lineup capable of erasing a multi-run deficit by himself. But behind him, the Giants are trotting out a lineup missing several regulars, and their bullpen has taken on extra innings all series after Webb has had trouble working deep into games. San Diego’s staff, health issues aside, has been the more stable of the two by a wide margin.

It’s also worth noting the shape of the series so far: 7-5 and 7-6 wins for the Padres, both competitive but both decided by the two or three extra plays a healthier, deeper roster tends to make late. Neither game was ever really out of San Francisco’s reach, and Sunday’s finale looks like more of the same shape — a game the Giants can hang in for six or seven innings before San Diego’s bullpen depth and lineup length take over.

That depth question matters even more with San Diego’s injury list including Joe Musgrove, Gavin Sheets, Ramon Laureano, Jason Adam and Luis Rengifo. The Padres have absorbed those losses and kept winning anyway, which says as much about the health of this roster’s foundation as anything in the box score. San Francisco, meanwhile, doesn’t have that luxury — too many regulars are out for the Giants to paper over one more injury with organizational depth the way San Diego has managed to.

Prediction and Best Bet

San Diego’s lineup has too many answers up and down the order, and the Pivetta-Webb gap on the mound is wide enough that it should show up on the scoreboard again. Expect another tight game for a few innings before the Padres’ depth pulls it away late, capping off a series sweep.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: San Diego Padres 6, San Francisco Giants 4
  2. Best Bet: Padres on the moneyline

Pivetta’s recent form against a struggling Webb, plus a Padres lineup that’s produced all series, makes San Diego the play even at a -130 price on the road.
