The Plum Trade Still Looms Over Everything in L.A.
The story of the Sparks’ season is Kelsey Plum’s absence. She was averaging 23.9 points and 6.4 assists — second in the league in scoring — before a lower-leg injury in late June turned into a full-blown transition. Los Angeles went 3-9 without her on the floor, fired general manager Raegan Pebley amid the slide, and then shipped Plum to Phoenix on August 2 in exchange for guard Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder. It was as clear a signal as a front office can send that a season is over before it’s technically over.
What’s kept the Sparks competitive anyway is Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby. Ogwumike is putting up 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and a career-strong 40.7 percent from three, while Hamby is right behind her at 15.2 points and 7.7 boards on 55.3 percent shooting from the field. Those two combined for 41 points and 17 rebounds in that July 28 upset of New York, and if Los Angeles is going to make this competitive again, it starts with that frontcourt duo carrying the same kind of load.
New York is 11-5 at home this season but just lost by 14 to Indiana at Barclays Center — its own building hasn’t been the fortress the raw home record suggests lately.
That’s the crack in New York’s armor. Satou Sabally remains in concussion protocol and Leonie Fiebich is dealing with a foot issue, both day-to-day, which has forced first-year head coach Chris DeMarco to lean harder on Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones than he’d like this late in the season. New York is a top-tier team even shorthanded, but shorthanded top-tier teams are exactly the kind that get caught by scrappy, nothing-to-lose opponents. The Sparks are exactly that right now.

Los Angeles has the motivation and the frontcourt matchup to make this uncomfortable for a stretch, and New York’s own recent form — a 14-point home loss its last time out — is a real yellow flag heading into Thursday. But the Liberty’s ceiling with Stewart, Ionescu and Jones healthy enough to play still outweighs what a M. Akoa Makani-less, Plum-less Sparks roster can sustain for 40 minutes.
