The West’s top two teams are separated by 2.5 games, and Saturday afternoon at Target Center they settle back into the same building where the Lynx have lost only twice all season.
Quick take:
- Pick: Minnesota Lynx -5.5
- Why: Minnesota’s league-best home record and top-five net rating are too much for an Aces team still missing frontcourt depth
- The number to watch: The Lynx are 13-2 at home this season
Minnesota (25-7) sits atop the Western Conference and the entire league standings, though a 89-82 loss to the Sparks on Thursday snapped what had been a dominant stretch and dropped them to 9-1 over their last 10. Las Vegas (22-9) is right behind them at 2.5 games back, fresh off an 86-84 overtime escape against Indiana that pushed their own record to 7-3 in the last 10. This is the first of two meetings between these clubs in an eight-day span, with the return leg set for August 15 in Las Vegas.
Both franchises have spent the summer trading haymakers atop the conference, and with the playoff picture starting to take shape, every possession between these two carries extra weight. Minnesota has built its case as the league’s best team around suffocating defense and depth, while Las Vegas has leaned on its superstar to paper over injuries that would sink most other rosters.
Why the Market Trusts Minnesota at Home
Oddsmakers have Minnesota favored by 5.5 points with moneyline pricing around -218, while Las Vegas sits at +176 on the road. The total opened near 184 points, reflecting two offenses that both rank inside the league’s top tier — Minnesota averages 92.4 points per game to Las Vegas’s 91.8. The Lynx have been nearly unbeatable at Target Center, going 13-2 there this season, and that home-court gap is doing most of the heavy lifting in this line.

A’ja Wilson vs. a Banged-Up Aces Frontcourt
A’ja Wilson has been the best player on the floor in almost every game she’s played this month, averaging 26.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists on the season and coming off a 26-point, 13-rebound, three-assist performance in Thursday’s overtime win over the Fever. The problem for Las Vegas is who’s standing next to her. Cheyenne Parker-Tyus remains out with a concussion and Justine Pissott is sidelined with a leg injury, thinning a frontcourt rotation that was already down Jasmine Barker for the season. That leaves Wilson doing even more of the interior work against a Minnesota front line that has been built around exactly this kind of matchup all year.
Napheesa Collier is the counterpunch. She’s averaging 18.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists this season and just posted 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the loss to Los Angeles, showing the two-way versatility that’s kept Minnesota’s defense elite even in a rare off night. Guard Olivia Miles has quietly emerged as Minnesota’s engine, putting up 19.8 points and 5.8 assists per game and scoring 23 in that same Sparks loss — she’s the name to watch if Las Vegas tries to load up on Collier and Wilson early.
The Lynx are 13-2 at home this season, a mark no other Western Conference team can match.
That home-floor dominance is the crux of this pick. Minnesota’s offensive rating (113.7) and net rating (+10.9) both rank among the league’s best, and even with Chloe Bibby unavailable for personal reasons, the Lynx have enough perimeter shooting and interior physicality to control tempo against a Las Vegas team playing shorthanded up front. The Aces have the star power to hang in transition and off Wilson’s individual brilliance, but road environments against elite defenses have been where they’ve struggled to close.
Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young remain steady complements for Wilson in Las Vegas’s backcourt, and that trio is capable of erasing a deficit in a hurry given how much of the Aces’ offense runs through pick-and-roll reads between Gray and Wilson. But asking a shorthanded frontcourt rotation to also match Minnesota’s rebounding numbers over 40 minutes, on the road, against a team defending its home floor at a 13-2 clip, is a tall order even for a group with this much talent.
Prediction and Best Bet
Wilson will get her numbers regardless of who Las Vegas has available, but Minnesota’s depth, home-court edge and Collier-Miles combination should be enough to control the final quarter.
The pick:
- Prediction: Minnesota Lynx 90, Las Vegas Aces 83
- Best Bet: Minnesota Lynx -5.5
Fade the road underdog here — Minnesota’s home record and full rotation make this a tougher climb than the moneyline alone suggests. Bettors tracking live lines throughout the afternoon can check the live sports betting odds hub for updates as tip-off approaches.
