Kyle Schwarber’s Walk-Off Homer Caps Six-Run Ninth as Phillies Sweep Cardinals, Extend Win Streak to Nine

Kyle Schwarber delivered one of the most stunning home runs of the 2026 MLB season on Sunday, crushing a two-run, walk-off blast with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete a six-run rally and lift the Philadelphia Phillies past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4. The win capped a three-game sweep, pushed Philadelphia’s winning streak to nine straight games, and pulled the Phillies to within 2.5 games of the division-leading Atlanta Braves in the National League East.

Schwarber, who signed with Philadelphia in free agency ahead of the 2022 season, has become one of the most feared power hitters in baseball and a fixture in the middle of the Phillies’ lineup. Sunday’s home run was his major league-leading 39th of the season, pushing his RBI total to 78 and marking the second straight game in which he went deep. It was also Philadelphia’s first walk-off home run since Schwarber hit one in June 2023, adding a poetic bookend to an afternoon that looked lost for most of its nine innings.

Down to the Final Out, Phillies Erupt for Six Runs

Philadelphia trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the ninth inning at Citizens Bank Park, with the Cardinals seemingly in control after eight scoreless frames from the Phillies’ bats. St. Louis was down to its final out when the momentum flipped entirely. Edmundo Sosa delivered a three-run double to cut the deficit and ignite the rally, and Bryan De La Cruz followed with a single through the left side to knot the score at 4-4. That set the stage for Schwarber, who worked back from an 0-2 count against Cardinals reliever Riley O’Brien before launching a 2-2 sinker an estimated 459 feet to center field, well over the batter’s eye and out of the ballpark entirely. The blast sent a crowd of 42,610 into a frenzy as Schwarber flipped his helmet and rounded the bases to a mob of teammates waiting at home plate.

Cardinals center fielder Nathan Church didn’t bother giving chase, taking only a few steps before pulling up as the ball sailed into the Philadelphia night. O’Brien (3-5) was tagged with the loss after St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol opted to leave him in to face Schwarber. On the other side, Phillies reliever Alex McFarlane (3-1) worked a perfect top of the ninth to keep the deficit at four runs and put his team in position for the historic comeback, earning the win in the process.

Nine Straight Wins and a Real Shot at the NL East

The victory marked Philadelphia’s ninth consecutive win and its third straight series sweep, a stretch that has completely reshaped the NL East race in the season’s final stretch. At 73-58, the Phillies have now closed within 2.5 games of Atlanta, turning what looked like a comfortable divisional cushion for the Braves into a genuine dogfight heading into September. Philadelphia has won eight of its last ten games overall, riding a red-hot offense and a bullpen that has held up under pressure in a string of tight, late-inning finishes.

Schwarber’s power surge has been central to the turnaround. With his league-leading home run total and an offense that has found ways to manufacture runs even when the long ball isn’t falling, the Phillies enter the season’s stretch run looking like one of the most dangerous teams in the National League. Fans tracking the race — and bettors keeping an eye on the latest MLB odds — will be watching closely as Philadelphia and Atlanta head toward a potential head-to-head showdown for the division crown. For those looking to get in on the action as the Phillies push for October, checking out a DraftKings promo code is a natural next step before the stretch run heats up further.

With the Cardinals now finished with their season-long road trip at 5-6 and the Phillies rolling into the final weeks of the regular season, Philadelphia’s clubhouse has every reason for confidence. A nine-game winning streak fueled by a walk-off from the game’s home run leader is the kind of moment that can define a season — and for the Phillies, it has arrived at exactly the right time.
