Ketel Marte Lands on 10-Day IL as Diamondbacks Finally Explain Boston No-Show

The Arizona Diamondbacks have transferred Ketel Marte to the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation, general manager Mike Hazen confirmed Thursday, closing out a bizarre 72-hour stretch that began when the star second baseman simply didn’t show up for a game in Boston. Marte met with Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo in the Phoenix area on Thursday, and an MRI on the knee confirmed the inflammation that had reportedly been bothering him for over a week.

Marte, a three-time All-Star and one of the more productive bats in Arizona’s lineup, had traveled with the team to Boston for a series against the Red Sox but never appeared at Fenway Park for Monday’s opener. Lovullo told reporters afterward that Marte was dealing with a “personal issue” and was being placed on the restricted list, a designation reserved for personal or non-baseball absences that requires MLB approval. Because Marte started on the restricted list rather than going straight to the injured list, his IL stint cannot be backdated — meaning the earliest he can return is August 30, and he will not be paid for the three days he spent away from the team.

What We Know — and What Hazen Isn’t Saying

Hazen was direct about the medical piece of the situation but declined to detail whatever prompted Marte’s disappearance in the first place. “I’m not going to get into specifics,” Hazen said Thursday, confirming only that Marte received an injection for the knee inflammation and that the team expects him back on the roster before the season ends. The knee issue itself wasn’t out of nowhere — Marte left an August 14 game against Atlanta early due to left knee discomfort, sat out the next day, then played through it on August 16, just before the Boston trip. Whether the personal matter and the physical one are connected has not been addressed publicly.

The absence marked the second time in as many seasons that Marte has gone missing from the club without immediate explanation, which only heightened scrutiny once the restricted-list move was announced. Through the ordeal, Marte was said to be in contact with the organization through “appropriate channels,” and by Thursday the situation had shifted fully into medical territory with the MRI results and IL transfer. In 469 at-bats this season, Marte is hitting .249 with 21 home runs, 67 RBIs and a .760 OPS — numbers that, while a step down from his career .818 OPS mark, still make him one of Arizona’s most important everyday bats in the middle of a playoff push.

How the Betting Market Is Reading Arizona’s Wild Card Chances

The timing stings for a Diamondbacks team squarely in the thick of the National League Wild Card race. Arizona entered the week at 67-61, sitting just one game back of a playoff spot, with the Cubs, Phillies and Padres all jockeying for position above them. NL Wild Card futures had the Diamondbacks bouncing around in recent weeks — from roughly +135 in late July, to as tight as -110 in early August as Arizona surged, before drifting back out toward the +114 range just before the Marte news broke, reflecting how tightly bunched the field is behind Chicago and Philadelphia.

Losing a middle-of-the-order bat with pop for at least 10 days — and possibly longer, given Hazen offered no certainty on severity — is the kind of subtraction that tends to nudge a bubble team’s postseason number in the wrong direction, especially with Arizona now needing its lineup to carry more weight against a stacked slate that includes Cincinnati and Chicago at home. Bettors monitoring Diamondbacks futures should expect any further movement to hinge less on Marte’s return timeline and more on how the lineup performs without him over the next week and a half, since Arizona has no such thing as a scheduled off day to wait him out with the standings this tight.
