Elimination baseball is back at Rate Field, and this time it’s the White Sox who get to decide whether a century-plus curse finally breaks.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Guardians moneyline
  • Why: Parker Messick has been lights-out at Rate Field all year and Cleveland’s lineup is clicking at exactly the right time
  • The number to watch: Messick’s 2.45 ERA with 18 strikeouts against just two walks in 14 2/3 innings at Rate Field this season

Chicago leads this ALDS 2-1 and gets a chance to close it out in front of its own crowd Thursday, something the franchise hasn’t pulled off since beating the Cubs for the 1906 World Series. Cleveland isn’t interested in playing the role of historical footnote again. The Guardians staved off a sweep in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, pounding out two triples in a 9-3 Game 3 win that looked nothing like the offense that managed just three runs across the series’ first two games.

Why the Market Still Likes Cleveland in a Must-Win Spot

Here’s the twist: even trailing the series and playing on the road, the Guardians are sitting as slight moneyline favorites for Game 4, priced right around -113 with the total set at 7.5 runs. That’s the pitching matchup talking. Parker Messick gets the ball for Cleveland after a strong Game 1 outing (two runs, four hits, two walks, six strikeouts), and his track record at Rate Field specifically — a 2.45 ERA with 18 strikeouts and only two walks across 14 2/3 innings there this season — is the single biggest reason oddsmakers see this as a coin flip rather than a White Sox coronation. It’s also worth noting this isn’t a lopsided season series. Chicago won the regular-season head-to-head matchup, but narrowly, and several of those 14 meetings came down to the final innings. Neither club has dominated the other in 2026, which makes the pitching matchup — not history — the real deciding factor tonight.

José Ramírez Is Heating Up at the Worst Possible Time for Chicago

José Ramírez opened this series 0-for-6 with two walks, looking every bit like a veteran pressing in an elimination atmosphere. Then Game 3 happened. The seven-time All-Star went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base — and he wasn’t done. In the sixth inning, with Cleveland clinging to a 5-3 lead, Ramírez made a diving stop on a bases-loaded smash off the bat of Miguel Vargas that may have saved the game. “I felt it was a significant shift in momentum,” Ramírez said afterward. Jo Adell matched him blow for blow, going 2-for-4 with a bases-clearing triple that turned a tight game into a laugher.

On the other side, Chicago’s 35-homer rookie slugger Munetaka Murakami has been the engine of their offense all year — 77 RBI, a .478 slugging mark, OPS north of .800 — but he went hitless in Game 3 and the White Sox as a team struck out 19 times while going just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. That’s the version of this lineup Cleveland needs to see again.

The Guardians hit two triples in a single postseason game for the first time in franchise history Wednesday — and became the first team to do it since the 2024 World Series Dodgers.

That kind of extra-base damage doesn’t happen by accident. Cleveland’s lineup started hunting mistakes instead of waiting on them, and Foster Griffin’s franchise-record seven strikeouts over 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings bought the offense time to find its footing. If Messick gives the Guardians length today, that bullpen formula repeats itself.

Manager Stephen Vogt isn’t changing much heading into Game 4 — Austin Hedges slots back in behind the plate to catch Messick, as he’s done most of the season, but otherwise it’s the same nine that broke out Wednesday: Steven Kwan leading off, Ramirez and Chase DeLauter in the heart of the order, with Jo Adell at DH after his huge night. Chicago counters with a righty-heavy lineup built around Murakami, Miguel Vargas and Randal Grichuk, with Colson Montgomery hitting ninth. Both managers know the margin for error is basically zero from here — one team flies home for Game 5, the other starts its offseason.

Prediction and Best Bet

Hagen Smith has been nothing short of outstanding this postseason — he and fellow rookie Grant Taylor have combined for 17 strikeouts and just two runs allowed (one earned) across six games and 14 innings, and Chicago is 2-0 in games Smith has started this series. That’s a real threat to Cleveland’s momentum. But Messick’s command at this specific ballpark, plus a Guardians offense that just found its stride at the plate, tips the scale toward the road team forcing a Game 5.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Cleveland Guardians 5, Chicago White Sox 3
  2. Best Bet: Guardians on the moneyline

Cleveland’s bats are finally rolling, and that’s a dangerous combination with a pitcher who’s dominated in this exact building. Back the Guardians to extend the series.
