Cleveland is fighting for a division title with three games left, and Kansas City is just trying to get to the offseason — but the Royals have been the ones making this series ugly.
Quick take:
- Pick: Guardians -1.5
- Why: Cleveland’s rotation and bullpen swing heavily favor the road team, and Kansas City has lost eight of its last ten with nothing left to play for
- The number to watch: Royals are 2-8 in their last 10 games with a minus-112 run differential on the season
The Guardians roll into Kauffman Stadium at 84-76, sitting a half-game up on the White Sox atop the AL Central with three to play. Friday’s 12-9 slugfest went Cleveland’s way, and the Guardians have won eight of their last 10 to claw back into first place after briefly ceding the division lead to Chicago in mid-September. That first-place tie came down to a walk-off, go-ahead win over the White Sox just over a week ago, and Cleveland hasn’t looked back since.
Kansas City, meanwhile, is 68-92, 16 games back and mathematically eliminated weeks ago. The Royals have dropped eight of their last 10 and are simply playing out the string in front of a Kauffman Stadium crowd more interested in next spring than this weekend. It’s the kind of matchup where the standings gap should, in theory, make picking a side easy — except the pitching matchup complicates it.
Cleveland opened as a modest favorite on the live MLB odds boards, with the moneyline sitting around -125 and the run line at -1.5 (+129) as of Saturday. Kansas City is priced at +105 on the moneyline and +1.5 (-155) on the run line, with the total set at 8.5. That’s not a blowout number for a team 16 games under .500, and it reflects two things: Michael Wacha has quietly been Kansas City’s most reliable arm all year, and Cleveland’s bullpen has had to lean heavily on unproven names down the stretch. Bettors chasing the Guardians on the run line are betting on Cleveland’s lineup finally putting a bad Royals team away instead of grinding out another one-run game.
| Saturday, September 26 at 7:10 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Cleveland Guardians | -1.5 (125) | -124 | O 8.5 (-102) |
| Kansas City Royals | +1.5 (-160) | +110 | U 8.5 (-120) |
The gap in recent form between these two clubs has been enormous all September, and the numbers below make it obvious why Cleveland is favored even on the road.

Tanner Bibee gets the ball for Cleveland carrying a rough 6-15 record and a 4.35 ERA, numbers that undersell how much better he’s pitched over his last several turns. He’s coming off a strong outing against Oakland and has settled in as the Guardians’ most trusted arm for the stretch run, even if the win total doesn’t show it. Wacha, by contrast, has been steady all year at 9-9 with a 3.33 ERA and a career-best walk rate, and he’ll be trying to hand Kansas City a rare quality start against a Cleveland order that’s finally waking up.
The name driving that Cleveland offense right now isn’t Jose Ramirez, who slogged through an ugly stretch hitting .111 over an 11-game span in September before a recent 6-for-11 uptick. It’s Angel Martinez, the 24-year-old switch-hitting left fielder who has been the Guardians’ best hitter all month. Over his last 15 games, Martinez is slashing .339/.362/.696 with four home runs and 12 RBI, including a two-homer, both-sides-of-the-plate game against Oakland and a two-double, four-RBI effort in Friday’s win at Kauffman. He’s been the engine of this Cleveland surge, and Kansas City’s beleaguered pitching staff hasn’t found an answer yet.
Kansas City has lost eight of its last ten games and enters Saturday with a run differential of minus-112 on the season, the worst mark in the American League.
That kind of collapse doesn’t turn around because the calendar says late September. The Royals have gotten swept or nearly swept in three straight series — Houston, Pittsburgh, and now Chicago before Cleveland arrived — and their bullpen has been gassed for weeks. Wacha giving Kansas City a chance to hang for five or six innings is realistic. Expecting the Royals’ relief corps to hold a lead late against a Cleveland lineup that’s rediscovering its power is a much tougher ask.
Cleveland doesn’t need to be spectacular here. It just needs to keep doing what it’s done for 10 straight games.
The Guardians have the better arm on paper when adjusted for recent form, the hotter lineup, and every incentive in the world with a division race still alive. Kansas City has none of that, and it shows in a bullpen that’s been torched all September.
The pick:
Cleveland’s carrying real momentum into a series against a team with nothing left to play for, and that gap should show up on the scoreboard again Saturday night.
